How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia

If you have items that you no longer need or want, donating them to an op shop (also known as a thrift store) in Australia is a great way to give back to your community and help those in need. Op shops rely on donations from individuals like you to stock their shelves and raise funds for various charitable causes. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to donate to an op shop in Australia.

  • Step 1: Choose a charity – There are many op shops in Australia run by different charities. Research and select a charity that aligns with your values and causes you want to support.
  • Step 2: Find a local op shop – Use the charity’s website or online directories to locate op shops in your local area.
  • Step 3: Check donation guidelines – Visit the op shop’s website or call them to check their donation guidelines. Some op shops may have specific criteria for the items they accept.
  • Step 4: Sort and clean your items – Before donating, make sure to sort through your items and only donate those that are in good condition and still usable. Clean the items if necessary.
  • Step 5: Drop off your donation – Take your donation to the op shop during their opening hours. Some op shops also offer donation collection services, so check if that option is available.
  • Step 6: Get a receipt – Ask for a donation receipt if you would like to claim a tax deduction for your donation. Keep the receipt for your records.

Lots of unique items and brica-brac, always new stuff to temp a bargin hunter like myself. A big range of furniture including beds and matresses, both secondhand and new. The men’s clothing is limited like most op shops but dressing up in drag can be heaps of fun.. er.. Did i mention they have a large selection of books and old records and get in quick for the bargains out the front.

Brilliant, students discount on Wednesday 20% off, carer’s discount Thursday 20%off.

Friendly Helpful volunteer staff. Amazing selection of homewears clothing and so much more. Also has a point collection plan to save up for that extra discount.

I really love this opshop, it’s a hidden gem and has such a large selection of goodies, good condition furniture and clothing, shoes, linen and kids stuff. Two staff today were so lovely and forgiving when my young son accidentally broke something. They checked to see if he was ok as the most important thing and that meant a lot to me. I am not from the area but I always love to come here when I am in Bendigo!

Super expensive for items that have been donated. How can people who have very little cash be expected to be able to get an outfit here? A 50c bubble wand from Kmart was priced at $1 ???‍♀️1st and last visit here.

Elderly male volunteer/staff member working at the clothing drop off was incredibly rude and accused me of cutting someone off when I simply parked next to another (already parked!) car in the donations drop off area. How this translates to cutting someone off when there was clearly enough space for 2 cars I do not know. Absolutely ridiculous and a disgusting way to treat members of the public who are supporting your charity. I had 5 bags of mostly new clothing to donate, ended up taking them to another op shop where the volunteers were polite and reasonable.

Great staff. Clean store. SO VERY OVERPRICED oh my goodness particularly items like second hand toys close to retail price. Nick Nacks and mugs well overpriced. I was looking for an affordable way to decorate my home but I would be better off going to target such a shame

You’re supposed to be there to help those less fortunate yet can’t reduce something when requested. I was told that the price is firm as new stock…seriously donated items you paid nothing for and you only see the profit! I have shopped here and donated here many times in the past. Disgusting and will never shop here again.

  1. Amazing book store with an incredible amount of interesting photography books just what I was looking for .The store owner was gracious enough to pose for a photo (sorry I did make you look a lot older than you are ) I would highly recommend you pay a visit when next in Bendigo allow a few hours .

  2. Just an absolutes joy to see it standing there day after day, year after year. Our favourite visit whenever we drop in town. The owner was so lovely despite the Easter crowd.

  3. Just go and take a look, it’s like an old grand library filled with a fantastic range of books. Or for those old enough the old Coles arcade book store in Melbourne.
I even found a rare publication at a good price.
