How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia

If you’re looking to declutter your home or support a good cause, donating to an op shop (opportunity shop) in Australia is a great option. Op shops are run by various charitable organizations and all donations are sold to raise funds for their programs and services. Here’s how you can donate to an op shop in Australia:

  • Research the op shop: Before donating, do some research to find the op shop that aligns with the cause or charity you wish to support. Different op shops support different organizations, so it’s good to know where your donations will go.
  • Check the donation guidelines: Op shops have different guidelines for what items they can and cannot accept. Check their websites or give them a call to find out what they need and any specific requirements they may have.
  • Sort and prepare your items: Sort through your belongings and separate them into different categories, such as clothing, household items, books, or toys. Make sure your items are clean and in good condition. If necessary, repair any damages or wash clothing before donating.
  • Pack your donations: Once you have sorted your items, pack them in boxes or sturdy bags to make it easier for transportation. Label the boxes if needed, especially if you have different categories of items.
  • Find a drop-off location: Most op shops have donation bins or drop-off points where you can conveniently leave your donations. If you can’t find one near you, check if they provide pick-up services or if there are alternative drop-off locations nearby.
  • Drop off or arrange collection: Take your packed donations to the designated drop-off location or arrange a collection with the op shop if they offer the service. Follow their instructions for drop-off or collection times and procedures.
  • Get a receipt: Many op shops offer receipts for tax-deductible purposes, so remember to ask for one when you donate. Keep the receipt for your records for when you file your taxes.

I dropped off donations here and looked inside the shop. The shop is very clean, well laid out, the staff or volunteers are all very nice. This shop support the RSPCA. Lots of parking next to the shop as well as street parking.

Great variety of products, can be overpriced, would have got 5 stars except my op shop experience was spoilt by older female volunteer shop assistant’s attitude last Thursday. She was unfriendly & hell bent shaming customers if they take more than 5 items into fitting room, even when no other customers were in store.

Such a gem of an op shop. The RSPCA op shops are fantastic. They have great stuff, friendly staff and very reasonable prices!

Unbelievably high prices. The parking was terrible and the Ladies behaved as though they were working in an up market Boutique. Maybe this is what the inner city is ok with but it’s definitely NOT Op shop standard. Very disappointed.

So refreshing to finally see a second hand store in inner Brisbane that is not exorbitantly priced. Got my self a few excellent items and the ladies were all so lovely. Vinnies and Salvos need to take a leaf out of this organisation’s book.

This place is a gem in West End which is a joy in itself. The nice gentleman that owns it kept up good conversation with my partner so he wouldn’t be bored so us three girls could shop. And shop we did. It was the only store on that trip that all three of us got something. And my daughter’s excitement about her rings would have been enough except I bought a BEAUTIFUL dress in neutral tones that is made in Australia but with fabric from Europe that has a nice lining. It’s high quality and I got a great price.

I found a kookaï dress here, retail value at $200 and bought for a really great price. Great staff and there was an older golden lab and a puppy just chilling in the shop. Cuteness overload. 10/10 visit

A hidden gem for second hand clothing, interesting jewellery, crystals, and friendly owners. You’ll also be greeted by their affectionate Labrador at the door.

  1. A very large, hidden Salvo store in an industrial style building on a quiet back street in Red Hill. One side is solely clothes, whilst the other is full or bric-a-brac, collectables, furniture, books, ornaments, antiques and the usual suspects. Could spend an hour or two here looking over everything. Well worth a visit if you’re a local Brismaze op-shopper.

  2. Expansive second hand store with everything from bikes to books and clothes to candlestick holders. Check out the discount colour of the day – reduced prices (though already cheap) for items with that colour price tag. Not easy to get to by public transport but does have plenty of parking.

  3. This place is so expensive that Kmart is cheaper. It’s a real shame as recycling goods should be people’s first go to than Kmart. People on a limited income would struggle to find affordable goods here. I found alot of the clothing to be inferior branded fast fashion in poor to ok quality. Any clothing of durable material and make was about $25 a piece! I found this whole experience very disappointing . Money over sustainability and humanity it seems.

  4. I highly recommend Salvos Redhill I picked up a good quality Avanti bicycle this morning in excellent condition, like brand new for a fraction of the price. I felt it was worth paying for something durable since I enjoy riding so much. There are also some top end road bicycles for the cycling enthusiasts. There is a bicycle repair and service shop there as well, which was handy to ask them questions.

  5. Today Monty and Sam collected a lounge from my home. What an asset they are to your team. They were very friendly and helpful, and they took great care when removing the lounge not to damage it or the doorway. I’m pleased to know that others will benefit from this donation and that this lounge will have another life. Thanks Monty and Sam.
