Treasure Hunting 101: Common Items in Australia’s Op Shops

The Food Co-op Shop in Canberra
The Food Co-op Shop in Canberra

Op shops in Australia, also known as second-hand or thrift stores, are known for offering a wide range of products at affordable prices. These shops rely on donations from the community, which means you can find a variety of items, from clothing and accessories to household items and furniture. Here are some common products you can find at op shops in Australia:

  • Clothing: Op shops are a great place to find second-hand clothing for all ages and styles. You can often find vintage pieces, designer labels, and unique items that you wouldn’t find in regular retail stores.
  • Accessories: Op shops also offer a range of accessories such as bags, belts, hats, scarves, and jewelry. These items can help complete your outfit or add a touch of individuality to your style.
  • Household items: Op shops often have a selection of household items, including kitchenware, tableware, small appliances, and home decor. These items are a budget-friendly way to update your home or find unique pieces with character.
  • Furniture: Many op shops have a furniture section where you can find second-hand sofas, tables, chairs, and other pieces to furnish your home. These items are often priced lower than new furniture and can add a vintage or eclectic vibe to your space.
  • Books: Op shops are a treasure trove for book lovers. You can find a wide range of genres, from fiction and non-fiction to cookbooks and children’s books. Purchasing second-hand books not only saves money but also contributes to sustainability by giving books a second life.
  • Toys and games: Op shops often have a selection of toys, games, and puzzles for children and adults. You can find vintage toys, board games, and even outdoor equipment for a fraction of the price compared to buying new.
  • Electronics: While not as common as other items, some op shops may have a small selection of electronics such as TVs, stereo systems, and small appliances. It’s always worth checking out the electronics section for hidden gems at discounted prices.

Some really cool things here, vintage toys, nice artworks, loads of tea sets, beautiful books.

Customer service is quite poor however. Two girls were on the shift today, right after I walked in one girl asked the other a question to which the second girl (she has very short, strawberry-blonde hair) answered very loudly giving very intimate details of her life and relationship with her mother. It was so embarrassing to listen too, and there was no escape! She was so loud I could hear her just as clearly on the other side of the shop.

Once I picked what I wanted to buy I returned to the counter. She walked in front of me, blocking my path but not acknowledging me like a normal person would in a small space, especially if they were working in said small space, not even eye contact. Once I finally got to the counter both girls were there, I tried to establish eye contact with strawberry-blonde girl because she was standing right in front of me but she ignored me again and had a very sullen look on her face. I actually wasn’t even sure if she worked there by that point because she was so rude, but another customer asked her a question so that confirmed she did. Very unwelcoming. The second was very helpful, smiled, acknowledged me, wrapped the item and said goodbye.

It was a very bizarre and uncomfortable experience. I was thinking of bringing my husband back there but I don’t think I will, it was just so awkward and I really don’t want to repeat it.

Have loved this place for ++years

Wonderful stock – maybe it’s the best shop in canberra

Prices are even pretty good : their bargain baskets out at the front contain loads of interesting miscellanea, & even generally, their weird & wonderful treasures are charged +/- on par with regular op-shops’ ‘scale of fees.’

Always organised, lots of new stock every time (I go at least once a month), easy parking, helpful staff. Only problem is the toilets aren’t open anymore and there aren’t any close by so my advice is to go before you shop!

I used to love coming to this store and was willing to travel from Tuggeranong regularly but since new management a while back took over, prices are through the roof. Store used to have weekly specials that you would be able to get bulk clothing at a reasonable prices and for a large family that’s exactly what we needed to do regularly for our growing family. Prices are so high now that a pair of Kmart shoes/clothing/items are priced only a few dollars under buying them new from store and honestly if I was paying that much I would buy new instead. Unfortunately it is not worth my time to visit the store anymore unless we are in the area and even then I leave with maybe 1 or 2 items instead of buying more like we used to.Second hand stuff at average quality, the pricing is far from reasonable. Spending $40-60 on coats or jackets in winter from second hand goods is completely pointless when I can spend the same buying new and have the item in better condition and at times quality. I think this price increase and the change of structure to the sales processes was a huge mistake, families who used to rely on this store in hard times now will feel more pressure than ever before.

Has a huge main area for clothing and furniture and a bargain basement for all the other little things that has been sitting around for a while. Very tidy and clean. Staff members are friendly and helpful. Worth to pay a visit when you are in Canberra.

I was after a pair of corduroy pants as a gift for a friend and called the store. They found some, put them aside and had them ready for me. Very inexpensive and they’re very high quality pants. Thanks!!

  1. A little bit of everything. If you believe one person’s trash is another person’s treasure…this place is for you!
Used furniture, kitchenware, homewares, books, CDs, prams, timber, building bits and pieces and so much more.

  2. An invaluable resource for the Canberra community. You can find some real treasures here. There are many affordable items of furniture, glassware, cooking utensils, and much more. Also honestly this place treats everyone who enters with dignity and respect, which is more than can be said about some other thrift stores.

If you can, then shop here, and donate where possible. This place is just awesome

  3. Greenshed Mitchell – The cashier was rude and wanted too much for a desk chair when we tried to ask for cheaper he was rude and told me to get a stool. Honestly living conditions are high at the moment and living in Canberra is so expensive and you would think the staff would be more understanding. So don’t go because this store is better going to Canberra Buy Sell Swap or any other Greensheds not this one with a cashier with attitude and money hungry.

  4. I feel this place is a real rip off. Much much cheaper to get things on Gumtree and marketplace! And green shed gets things for free from the community so I feel this is cheating. … I asked about an old nasty bike and they said $100. You can get a new one from Kmart for like $120. I will never give my nice junk to green shed again.

  5. LOVE, The Green Shed anyone who has anything nasty to say about the man behind the counter needs to get a grip. Everyone there works so hard I have seen so many rude customers and the staff always handle it with patience and grace. Keep up the work everyone
