Treasure Hunting 101: Common Items in Australia’s Op Shops
Op shops in Australia, also known as thrift stores or charity shops, offer a wide range of donated items, making them a treasure trove for bargain hunters and eco-conscious shoppers. As these shops rely on donations, the stock can vary greatly depending on what has been donated. However, there are some common products that you can often find at op shops in Australia.
Here is a list of common products you can find at op shops in Australia:
- Clothing: Op shops are a great place to find pre-loved clothing for men, women, and children. You can often find designer pieces, vintage clothing, and unique items that are no longer available in retail stores.
- Accessories: From handbags and wallets to scarves and belts, op shops often have a variety of accessories to complete your outfit.
- Furniture: Op shops frequently have a selection of furniture, including chairs, tables, dressers, and bookshelves. These items are usually priced at a fraction of their original cost.
- Home decor: You can find a range of home decor items at op shops, such as lamps, artwork, vases, and decorative objects. These pieces can add character to your home without breaking the bank.
- Kitchenware: Op shops often have a selection of kitchenware, including plates, bowls, glassware, and cooking utensils. You can find vintage and retro pieces that add charm to your kitchen.
- Books: Op shops are a paradise for book lovers. You can find a wide range of books, including novels, non-fiction, children’s books, and cookbooks.
- Electronics: While not as common as other items, op shops occasionally have electronics such as DVD players, radios, and small kitchen appliances.
- Toys and games: Op shops often have a selection of toys and games for children of all ages. From board games to stuffed animals, you can find affordable entertainment options.

Didn’t have the time to browse, or to head up to the second level, however, there seemed to be a good stock range and relatively fast stock turn. Had a great conversation with the salesperson to pick-up some local tourist information.

This is both the neatest and well stocked shop of its kind in NSW. The stock is very fresh – turned over regularly – and many items I looked at had original labels still attached. Even the book collection seemed to be hand curated as there were none of those usual types of books you find in an op shop – none of the musty ones.
Friendly Staff. Needed something to keep the cold ? and rain ? off – mission accomplished ?… (plus got some other great little bargains) ???
One of few places can get good pure cotton t shirts and cheap footwear
The 2 wild dogs that attacked me at the post office shop here all the time, they get there food, water, clothes, bags, groceries, home essentials and furniture here, but they don’t get it from the store, they scab it from the dumpsters out back, and they don’t even take the tags off anything because there always prepared to sell it at will.
Fantastic, helpful volunteer staff who do everything they can to help you find the items that you need.
