3 weeks agoIt was a nice experience. We only got fish and chips but it is a good, quiet atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating options. We liked that we were able to serve our own sauces instead of paying for portions that aren’t near enough for the food. The portions were generous and satisfying. I was impressed with the crumbing on the fish and calamari. Not many soft drinks options3 months agoWonderful place to have fish and chips while enjoying the amazing view. Long weekend, wasn’t very crowded, food came quickly, drinks were nice. The parking is $20 dollars but if you spend in food it gets validated. The new renovation are worth it it looks amazing4 months agoGreat food at a brilliant location with views and fresh lake breezes. The only problem with being so good is the wait times, which go up to an hour or more, so plenty of time to hit the well-stocked bar for a few return visits. Bring some friends you like to pass the time, you’ll eventually get your fill of some very nice food!2 months ago‘beautiful place with nice view but bad food’This was the second time I tried fish and chips. We had a take away for the first time and it was very disappointing as the fish and chips were soggy. So this time, four of us had dining in. Soon we ordered the fish and chips, it took probably 2 mins to come out. And we had a bite straight away, then it was soggy and not really hot. I am 1000% certain food was already made and it was extremely disappointing.
3 weeks agofrozen Rubbish! We booked the cabana for my fathers lunch birthday today (5-1-24) we were extremely disappointed with the food! The seafood platter was not edible, the Balmain Bug & crab did not look nice & tasted like frozen rubbish. The grilled prawns were disgusting, the pumpkin salad was tasteless! The only thing that was nice was the pizza (the prawns were disgusting on the pizza) & the crumbed Dory and chips, which was bought to our table an hour after the rest of the food, after asking for it 3 times. Over $300 worth of food served in cardboard at a yacht club is disgraceful! When we asked for plates to share the platters we were told they don’t have plates, so we ripped the lids off the served food and used as plates, like we were having takeaway in a park! I mentioned the disappointment to 2 staff members, with no response, so I went in to see the manager who said he would talk to the chef and come back to see me. We sat there for another 40 minutes waiting for him to come back to discuss the disappointment but with no reply! We had 2 separate orders totaling over $300, what a disgrace! We arrived before it got busy, and as a chef of 20 years I understand pressure in the kitchen, but it’s a simple menu! Food and customer service I wouldn’t even give 1 star! (The Barista was lovely and made good coffee) Extremely disappointed that we got no reply from the supervisor, I will never visit again and never recommend Snapper on the Lake. Also adding the greasy handprints on the bathroom doors, and dirty floors.

5 Replies to Experience 10 Top-rated Fish Market in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory
Haven’t been here in over 5 years and what a huge change. So many stores so many food places. The produce options for food was so good. We tried various places for food. We even managed to buy some books. We had a lovely few hours exploring
I’m not sure what to cook! So I went to #fyshwickmarkets for a stroll in the market! The jumbo blueberries in City are always sold out, but I found them here, so I bought two boxes right away. One box of Jumbo blueberries costs $4.9!
Additionally, they had a wide variety of tomatoes on display, including a unique one called ox heart/cow heart! However, they were quite expensive. @bili_blu managed to buy gourmet tomatoes for $2.9/kg, which is a better deal. ??
They also had a wide selection of free-range eggs here. Personally, I recommend #Canobolas Free Range Eggs from the Wiffcns stall. The eggs are fresh, the shells are thick, and the egg yolks have a beautiful color! Plus, the price is not too high, $7 for 12 eggs!
As for seafood, I don’t recommend buying it here. Although they have a variety, the prices are high. It’s better to go to Belconnen for that!
Fyshwick markets are my weekly go-to for fresh produce in Canberra. There is a wide variety of green grocers, butchers, seafood stores, delicatessens , an assortment of cafes and food stalls, and much much more. All the stores offer fresh produce and much better quality than you will find at the major supermarkets. The prices are also comparable to the supermarkets and sometimes much cheaper (especially for the quality).
A few recommendations if you want to grab a meal or a drink- try a barista brewed coffee and a pastry at Piccolo, if you’re hungry the kebabs at Turkish Kebab House are massive, the fresh handmade dumplings at MaMa Dumpling are excellent, fresh cooked fish and chips at Ocean Fresh Seafood, try a Pho soup at the Vietnamese bakery (an institution), or a loaded pan style pizza slice at newly opened Colosseum. Also there are a couple of sausage stands if you feel like the classic gourmet snag on a roll.
There are always samples as well for those who like to try before they buy. The grocers will normally do you a deal for bulk-buys eg boxes of fruit (just ask). The butchers are also accommodating for special orders.
My Local Guide TIP: come in on Sunday afternoon when you can buy heavily discounted perishable items (meats, veg, etc) that they clear before closing for Mon- Wed.
Definitely worth a visit if you want to get some quality produce or grab something to eat.
Nice collection of shops to cater to groceries and brunch needs. There’s a nice Asian supply store carrying all the herbs and spices you need and some other things. There’s also a nice halal poultry store selling mainly fresh chicken and some little meat cuts. The fruits and veggies we got at Fyshwick are also always some of the best.
If you care about quality cooking, with the highest of quality ingredients, you NEED to shop here.
Sure things are pricey, but that’s what makes a good meal, great.
Freshest of the freshest bread, fruit and vege, meat, cheese, the list goes on.
The atmosphere is bussing. Always busy and moving, just like a fresh market should be.
Sometimes there’s live music and there’s plenty of places to grab a gorgeous lunch.
You can spend hours here and still be surprised by what’s around the corner.
I recommend going when its busy as its awesome seeing so many smiles about food 🙂
