Charles Robert Darwin ( DAR-win; 12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882) was an English naturalist, geologist and biologist, widely known for his contributions to evolutionary biology. His proposition that all species of life have descended from a common ancestor is now generally accepted and considered a fundamental concept in science. In a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace, he introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process he called natural selection, in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. Darwin has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history and was honoured by burial in Westminster Abbey.Darwin's early interest in nature led him to neglect his medical education at the University of Edinburgh; instead, he helped to investigate marine invertebrates. His studies at the University of Cambridge's Christ's College from 1828 to 1831 encouraged his passion for natural science. His five-year voyage on HMS Beagle from 1831 to 1836 established Darwin as an eminent geologist, whose observations and theories supported Charles Lyell's concept of gradual geological change. Publication of his journal of the voyage made Darwin famous as a popular author.Puzzled by the geographical distribution of wildlife and fossils he collected on the voyage, Darwin began detailed investigations and, in 1838, devised his theory of natural selection. Although he discussed his ideas with several naturalists, he needed time for extensive research and his geological work had priority. He was writing up his theory in 1858 when Alfred Russel Wallace sent him an essay that described the same idea, prompting immediate joint submission of both their theories to the Linnean Society of London. Darwin's work established evolutionary descent with modification as the dominant scientific explanation of diversification in nature. In 1871, he examined human evolution and sexual selection in The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, followed by The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals (1872). His research on plants was published in a series of books, and in his final book, The Formation of Vegetable Mould, through the Actions of Worms (1881), he examined earthworms and their effect on soil.
Darwin published his theory of evolution with compelling evidence in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species. By the 1870s, the scientific community and a majority of the educated public had accepted evolution as a fact. However, many favoured competing explanations that gave only a minor role to natural selection, and it was not until the emergence of the modern evolutionary synthesis from the 1930s to the 1950s that a broad consensus developed in which natural selection was the basic mechanism of evolution. Darwin's scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences, explaining the diversity of life.

I recently dined here on the advice from a couple who were also here on holidays and I’m extremely grateful I took them up on that advice. We were greeted by friendly staff on arrival and shown to our seats. The restaurant is set out well with plenty of seating both inside and out in the alfresco area, reservations are made online through their website. Staff were prompt with service and very impressed by the way they went about their business however the star ⭐️ of the evening was the food absolutely amazing and cooked to perfection. The butter chicken and the duck salad were both on par as being the best restaurant dishes I have ever had and not forgetting the salted caramel and sour cream slice for dessert it was exceptional also. A big thank you to the staff particularly the chefs who delivered a dining experience that won’t be forgotten. I highly recommend dining at Hanuman (Darwin) for a memorable evening. A+ ??

Prawn pakora was a hit! Curries tasted good but the portion size of the rice was small.

Had a weekly special dessert but it was way expensive. Always loved coming here, customer service was great and nice dining experience overall

Bryan was an excellent host and I enjoyed all the food. My eyes might have been bigger than my appetite though haha as the portions are quite substantial

Couldn’t be happier with this place. I came here on a business trip with my boss and he advised me to go Hanuman for dinner, I wasn’t too impressed as I am not a fan of Thai restaurants but I must admit I came out of there thanking him to take me there. The staff were extremely polite, the food was 10/10 (best pork belly I ever had), everything was perfect. Will definitely going back on my next business trip.

  1. This place appears very popular. Each time we went past, there were lots of people. I found it to be WAY too loud. We went for a meal and left as soon as we finished. We usually pike to hang around for a few drinks and kick on for a bit but we couldn’t get out of there fast enough. The portion sizes were very large. The salad was just mixed lettuce leaves. THAT IS IT! The prawn salad was very average.

  2. Ordered the croc bites since I’ve never had them. They were very good to me… But I have nothing to compare too. Fast service on the day I visited. I sat at a table outside and used the QR code at the table to order. i had my food delivered quite quickly. Not a fan of ordering at the bar. I miss table service.

  3. Expected better Sunday roast from a well known Irish pub in Darwin. Yorkshire pudding was burnt and crusty. The burger and chips were good. The floor was a bit sticky and the seats at the booth were damp and a bit smelly.

  4. Beers are very nice and cold. Food is cheap and delicious; big serves. Service is good. A little bit noisy for the average bear, but its not too bad. The specials are worthwhile, $18 for large lunch and beer or happy hour beers are good value.
