The Auckland War Memorial Museum, Tāmaki Paenga Hira or Auckland Museum is one of New Zealand's most important museums and war memorials. Its neoclassical building constructed in the 1920s and 1950s, stands on Observatory Hill, the remains of a dormant volcano, in the Auckland Domain, near Auckland CBD. Museum collections concentrate on New Zealand history (and especially the history of the Auckland Region), natural history, and military history.
Auckland Museum's collections and exhibits began in 1852. In 1867 Aucklanders formed a learned society—the Auckland Philosophical Society, soon renamed Auckland Institute. Within a few years Auckland Museum was transferred to Auckland Institute, thereafter known as Auckland Institute and Museum until 1996. Auckland War Memorial Museum was the name of the new building opened in 1929, but since 1996 it has been more commonly used for the institution as well. From 1991 to 2003 the Museum's Māori name was Te Papa Whakahiku.

Beautiful open space, great collection gallery and enjoyed the visiting costume exhibition however found the cafe shutting an hour earlier than the gallery (and food stopping an hour before that, and cash acceptance) a bit frustrating. Consistent closing across the whole space and services would be desirable. Loved the children’s active gallery space too it was equal parts engaging and fun

Beautiful small museum. Mix of NZ and European art, contemporary and not so contemporary. Free entry, nice cafe. Stroll into Albert Park which is right behind the museum and a good place to sit in the sun (if there is any) and relax a bit after your visit to the museum

A really lovely gallery. My only criticism is that the cafe overlooks the street rather than the park at the back. It does mean (at the time of our visit) the terrace at the back was fairly quiet and you could hear the birds sing in the trees. A daft comment would also be, that if you want to sit on the terrace seating, don’t wear shorts, or have something to sit on… They’re not really made for naked summer legs! ? We paid to see the Guo Pei exhibition which was beautifully laid out with plenty of room between exhibits. The shop is also really nice with some lovely souvenirs of NZ and the exhibitions for both the out of towners and the locals.

The Guo Pei exhibition was extensive and interesting. The exhibits were well laid out giving ample room to admire each piece.

  2. Fantastic!
The Trex exhibit of Peter and Barbs is amazing.
Really enjoyed the sizing of them and the history surrounding the dinosaurs, also quite cool to see how small they were in comparison to the movies.

Also, the amazing info of the volcanoes exhibit.. was great detail and interesting and interactive.

Would recommend a day there definitely 🙂

  3. If u are a residence of Auckland, u are eligible for free entrance. Working holiday visa holders can also enjoy this benefit. Will be great if u can spend half day here exploring. Unfortunately the T-Rex fossil will be taken down for good from 11 Dec 2023 onwards. Might need to ask the museum management when will it be put back into display.

  4. The best museum to visit in New Zealand thanks to the Māori cultural performance. It started with a beautiful smile and welcome at the ticket counter. You have to do the Māori cultural performance. They were beyond amazing and what was said, taught, sung and performed was so emotional, inspiring, and spot on true. It is not a show, it is a glimpse into a way of life, and you are lucky if you get the chance to experience that.

  5. Not just a museum, an experience.
The building itself is amazing !
Sections : WW, Pacific islands, volcanoes and earthquakes, antiquity, rocks, contemporary collections about the city of Auckland…

Just go, you won’t be disappointed.
