The following outline is provided as an overview of and topical guide to New Caledonia:
New Caledonia – "sui generis collectivity" (in practice an overseas territory) of France, comprising a main island (Grande Terre), the Loyalty Islands, and several smaller islands. It is located in the region of Melanesia in the southwest Pacific. At about half the size of Taiwan, it has a land area of 18,575.5 square kilometres (7,172 sq mi). The population was 244,600 inhabitants as of January 2008 official estimates. The capital and largest city of the territory is Nouméa. The currency is the CFP franc.
Since 1986 the United Nations Committee on Decolonization has included New Caledonia on the United Nations list of non-self-governing territories. New Caledonia decided to remain within the French Republic after three referendums held in 2018, 2020, and 2021. The future status of New Caledonia (i.e. possibility of becoming an independent state) is not settled, however.
Its capital Nouméa is the seat of the regional organization the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (formerly the South Pacific Commission).

Please be aware this is a man made lake due to mining and last entry is 2pm. Vegetation is unique.

Well worth spending a day here. Easy 1.5h drive up from Noumea in the morning. Head to Pont Perignon and rent a bike from there, and go up the gorgeous 12km trails to see rivers, forests, and delightful cagus! Options for e-bikes and shuttles too. The staff on the reserve are very kind and helpful.

Absolutely unreal. The forest is amazing. We biked and kayaked in the worst weather imaginable and still had an outstanding day. We saw 4 cagou which was extra special. I would recommend this place for the natural wonders; it’s spectacular.

  1. Nice large park to take a walk, but nothing too fancy regarding the animals. In particular the cages are quite basic and not really pretty. Petting zoo seems to be closed and has been for some time. In face of the small fee it might be worth a visit, but Nouméa has much better attractions if you have limited time. E.g. the Lagoon aquarium was otherworldly compared to this park/zoo.

  2. Managed to squeeze in a brief park walk on our last day & if you like beautiful plants and ample foliage to provide shade this is a great place to chill out – bring a picnic lunch there are lots of spots to settle on but no feeding the animals!!

It was nice that the endemic fauna are close enough to really appreciate as I don’t think a cagou in the wild would have let us get so close.

That said, some of the bird enclosures are a bit small though & we only checked out the endemic section so we never witnessed what others have mentioned about mammals being kept in very confined spaces which possibly exist in other sections.

It’s quite hilly and the further you descend the longer you’ll inevitably need to ascend so keep this in mind if walking on inclines or declines are problematic.

Would loved to have spent longer & made a half day of it

  3. It’s a small park, but it has some picnic areas and many local birds and other animals.

    Also several scenic overlooks.

    Good for small children.

  4. This is a great experience for the whole family. The park is huge and there’s much more than just the animals, with beautiful forest walks and areas to explore. Some of the birds could probably do with some larger enclosures, but they do all look very well cared for. We had a great time, even in terrible rainy weather.
