It’s kinda sad economically and sociologically how many FOR LEASE signs are up in here these days (November 2023). Downstairs and upstairs too. I’ve been coming here since my first memories from 1973/1974, when there used to be a food court where Harris Scarf is now. Well, at least, that’s what 53 year old me recalls from 3 year old me. And Market Square has been here since Geelong was colonised back in the 1830s. And the empty stores, the closed stores have been a feature of Market Square since before Covid. Is it online shopping holding the blame? Home delivery? Yeh it’s a sad mystery.

A very sad reminder of how much better this area was before this horribly ugly carpark of a building destroyed central Geelong. Yes, I know it was 1983 and many of us probably thought that we needed something new but this should be a reminder that we need to think very carefully before destroying several iconic streets and buildings in the future. ?

No sidewalk sales on Melbourne Cup day like in previous years, dreary place to come to, one store in food court but good food, jb hifi the main store keeping the centre going. Management are and always have been useless sitting on their arses doing nothing useful, security- nowhere to be seen. Time to be sold to Westfield and get them to make it decent again

the guy with the cap backwards was very rude when we were ordering a coffee with a gingerbread for us. Unbelievable that working on customer service you can be that rude and also take a long time to make a bad bad cofee when is dead quiet.

Think it’s time to revamp the whole Market Square Centre. Unfortunate it’s so close to Westfield, so a new vision, perhaps more community focused necessary? Events, market stalls, services?

  1. I would give more than five stars if I could.

On my last visit, I asked at the concierge desk for a sunflower lanyard. I’d heard of it being used for people with non-visible disabilities and hoped it would improve my shopping experience.

It absolutely did. The person at the concierge desk was lovely. I wasn’t interrogated or made to prove that I needed it. She just took my word and gave it to me.

The stores I visited have always been staffed with great people, but with the lanyard, it was very much improved.

Some staff members outright said that if I needed space or needed them to speak up, to not hesitate to say that, which was really reassuring because it can be intimidating to ask for those things. And when I did need to ask for repetition, or something else offered, they did so and it made me feel so respected.

When I arrived for an appointment a bit early, I was asked if I wanted to sit down at the station for a few minutes to get used to everything going on and organise my thoughts.
It meant I had the time to be able to see the equipment that would be used, have a drink of water, and work out how best to ask for what I wanted.

One staff member saw I was struggling with the store being crowded and the noise levels, and she let me know the times of the day where it’s usually quieter, if I wanted to come back and be able to take my time without the crowd and noise.
I very gratefully did that, and it meant that I was able to come back and be able to enjoy the shopping experience, speak to the employee about what I was after and get suggestions, and buy products that addressed those needs.
If that hadn’t happened, I absolutely would have quickly bought any product, to get out of there faster, and it would have been the wrong thing.
Instead I was able to learn why certain products work to address different issues and why X product was the one that would best suit what I was wanting.

Some noticed the lanyard and were direct with me, some saw it and said something like ‘I like your sunflowers’ which I took as a subtle acknowledgement of it, and some didn’t say or do anything and I felt that all of them were very respectful.

Nobody pressed me for information or asked invasive questions or demanded to know why I needed it. Nobody did anything in a way that made me feel like I was being patronised or a bother.

And even when it was acknowledged out loud, it was discrete and polite and still felt like this is a normal interaction that they’re used to.

Everyone was amazing and I cannot recommend this place more. I will definitely be back many times.

  2. Busy hours during our visit , we orders 4 milkteas , one of them is original milktea flavour .. happy to have the pokemon cups , thats a good marketing strategy? although tea’s are fine .

  3. Geelong Westfield, where I spent the Christmas holiday, stated that parking is 2hours free on weekends for members. However, I was surprised to find that, despite being a Westfield member, I was instructed to enjoy a meal, proceed to the parking lot, and pay $3 to retrieve my car. I entered at 11:45 and left at 1:30, within a timeframe of less than 2 hours. This raised the question of why I had to pay $3 for such a short stay. In contrast, my experiences in Sydney or Canberra involved an automatic handling of the parking situation. It appears there might be a discrepancy in the implementation of parking policies, and I am curious to understand the reason for this inconsistency at Geelong Westfield.

  4. Westfield Geelong is the biggest and nicest shopping centre in the wider Geelong/Barwon region. It has a lot of stores and bustling food court. However:
    1. It is quite complicated to navvigate. If you dont have experience coming to it, you can easily get disoriented. Parking is divided in many sectors and you can easily get confused and struggle to find your parked car.
    2. The shops are geared towards a Geelong demographic or maybe a higher class visiting/holiday maker clientele, but certainly not your posh Westfield (e.g. like Westfield Doncaster) where you can find all the high-society bands etc. Its more of a middle class consumer shopping centre.
    3. The food court and other eateries are not that special. After about a year of coming back to Westfield Geelong, we were surprised to see that some eateries had gone and irrelevant stores have opened. We were shocked to see a car dealrship in the foodcourt! Westfield Geelong needs to work a bit more to raise the standard for food vendors!!

Overall, its a very nice shopping centre if you are visiting Geelong.
