The City of Brisbane is a local government area (LGA) which comprises the inner portion of the metropolitan area of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, Australia. Its governing body is the Brisbane City Council.
The LGAs in the other mainland state capitals (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide) are generally responsible only for the central business districts and inner neighbourhoods of those cities. However, the City of Brisbane administers a significant portion of the Brisbane Greater Capital City Statistical Area (GCCSA), accounting for just under half its population. As such, it has a larger population than any other local government area in Australia. The City of Brisbane was the first Australian LGA to reach a population of more than one million. Its population is roughly equivalent to the populations of Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory combined. In 2016–2017, the council administered a budget of over $3 billion, by far the largest budget of any LGA in Australia. The City derives from cities, towns and shires that merged in 1925. The main offices and central library of the council are at 266 George Street, also known as Brisbane Square. Brisbane City Hall houses the Council Chamber, the offices of the Lord Mayor and Deputy Mayor, meeting and reception rooms and the Museum of Brisbane.

We love visiting this library with its multi-level, city views and spacious design. There are pop up exhibitions, writer’s readings, book launches, STEM activities, workshops and so much more on offer. The children’s section is so inviting and there are games on offer for the children. The staff are so helpful and approachable. Borrowing and returns are also fully automated now so you can self-serve through the process. If you haven’t downloaded the Library app, I highly recommend it as you can place books on hold as well renew them through the app. It makes the entire process so convenient.

As far as amenities go for a common library the Brisbane Square Library is one that’s hard to beat, mostly due to the architectural design and the availability of windows for the study area. The entire library has a bright open plan feel without too many shelves cluttering the space. Die-hards may disagree and say there’snot enough books for such a large library but Ithink it evokes a very welcoming ambience. Wisely, the study chairs located on the second floor hug the perimeter of the floor space. The windows are artfully arranged in angular geometric patterns which afford every third seat a view of the Brisbane River. Not everyone gets a window seat however that is not always a requirement. Obviously some students don’t want the added distraction of the sunny outdoors when they have serious study to attend to. For my tastes and purposes this is a building that I feel most comfortable in, which is more than I can say about 99% of the constrictions in the rest of the city.

AWESOME library ! Even “travelers” can make a library card to borrow some books ♡ There are various comic books. Lots of magazines and children’s books. Clean tap water. Cozy sofa ♡ Visitors who don’t have a library card can use study room. (But, in advance, you need to write your name on the time table set in front of study rooms.) There are free English conversation events twice a week.

Many books and activities. They have section for great books to be borrowed for 7 days only. Not recommend to travel to here by car as you will not have public parking. I parked in casino nearby which costed $50 for 40 minutes.

We took the kids for a visit today, as an adventure. We took the elevator up to the level where the kids area was, a little more signage after exiting the lift to direct would be awesome! The kids area itself is a decent size but mainly aimed at older children. The projector for the floor wasn’t working and neither was one of the computers. Lots of books to choose from but it seemed most of the English board books were mixed with the international ones so it made it a little tricky for my kiddos. Huge variety of books and places to sit and read. But maybe some more things for the younger kids are needed 🙂

  1. This is a multi-level library on a beautiful site overlooking the river, of the Turrbal people on Meeanjin land. We caught the Meet the Artists exhibition. A nice exploration of different artists and their works. There’s a room full of giggling under the main library. Children full of jumps and games. Worth a visit. And the small bookstore is a nice place to catch a gift.

  2. Beautiful architecture with free wifi! Lots of things to do around with a great working space with many charging ports and places for children. Would highly recomend!

  3. Doing some quiet reading on Level 4 of the State Library of Queensland in Southbank. Great service: respectful, helpful and attentive librarians and library staff.

  4. Booked a room for a visiting colleague and myself to used for a brainstorming session. Easy to book, easy to use, stunning location. Room had power and whiteboard overlooking the river. Took my Melbournian workmate for coffee in library cafe and for lunch at Muse next to museum. A magnificent community asset.
