Wellington (; Māori: Te Whanganui-a-Tara [tɛ ˈɸaŋanʉi a taɾa] or Pōneke [ˈpɔːnɛkɛ]) is the capital city of New Zealand. It is located at the south-western tip of the North Island, between Cook Strait and the Remutaka Range. Wellington is the third-largest city in New Zealand, and is the administrative centre of the Wellington Region. It is the world's southernmost capital of a sovereign state. Wellington features a temperate maritime climate, and is the world's windiest city by average wind speed.Māori oral tradition tells that Kupe discovered and explored the region in about the 10th century. The area was initially settled by Māori iwi such as Rangitāne and Muaūpoko. The disruptions of the Musket Wars led to them being overwhelmed by northern iwi such as Te Āti Awa by the early 19th century.Wellington's current form was originally designed by Captain William Mein Smith, the first Surveyor General for Edward Wakefield's New Zealand Company, in 1840. Smith's plan included a series of interconnected grid plans, expanding along valleys and lower hill slopes. The Wellington urban area, which only includes urbanised areas within Wellington City, has a population of 215,200 as of June 2023. The wider Wellington metropolitan area, including the cities of Lower Hutt, Porirua and Upper Hutt, has a population of 440,900 as of June 2023. The city has served as New Zealand's capital since 1865, a status that is not defined in legislation, but established by convention; the New Zealand Government and Parliament, the Supreme Court and most of the public service are based in the city.Wellington's economy is primarily service-based, with an emphasis on finance, business services, government, and the film industry. It is the centre of New Zealand's film and special effects industries, and increasingly a hub for information technology and innovation, with two public research universities. Wellington is one of New Zealand's chief seaports and serves both domestic and international shipping. The city is chiefly served by Wellington International Airport in Rongotai, the country's second-busiest airport. Wellington's transport network includes train and bus lines which reach as far as the Kāpiti Coast and the Wairarapa, and ferries connect the city to the South Island.
Often referred to as New Zealand's cultural capital, the culture of Wellington is a diverse and often youth-driven one which has wielded influence across Oceania. One of the world's most liveable cities, the 2021 Global Livability Ranking tied Wellington with Tokyo as fourth in the world. From 2017 to 2018, Deutsche Bank ranked it first in the world for both livability and non-pollution. Cultural precincts such as Cuba Street and Newtown are renowned for creative innovation, "op shops", historic character, and food. Wellington is a leading financial centre in the Asia-Pacific region, being ranked 35th in the world by the Global Financial Centres Index for 2021. The global city has grown from a bustling Māori settlement, to a colonial outpost, and from there to an Australasian capital that has experienced a "remarkable creative resurgence".

We bought two E Mountain Bikes from here, the first time using Burkes as we’re from out of town. All the staff were very helpful and friendly, making our experience very pleasant. My wife said it’s the best bike place she’s been in as they have everything you need in store, and very professional staff working there. We’ll be using Burkes from now on as they’re worth the trip in. Highly recommend Gregg

I’ve been in for a few different issues just in the past year and the team has always given me the solid advice and equipment needed to get things fixed. Also it’s not mentioned on their website (not as far as I could see), but they also do key cutting – Top tip to the Team… advertise that as everyone east of Newtown may find you guys a lot handier than having to go into the city! – Definitely coming back for any issues/services etc! thanks team!

Ordered some bits for my new build on Monday afternoon, they arrived Tuesday morning. Couldn’t be happier with the speed and service, painless and fast.

I have been taking my bike to this shop for over 8 years…

Last month I took my bike there and explained that it has some problem with the gear… I asked the chain and and cassette to replaced… I also said the bike has other problem and asked the mechanic to have a look at some noise… I finally asked for a general service… I asked the mechanic to call me please, before changing anything extra so I don’t end up with a huge bill…

Anyway, the mechanic didn’t call me… they send me an email saying the bike is ready. I called them and said “Have you done the general service”… the guy on the phone said “No, you didn’t ask for it”… I said I did… any way, he was implying that I am mistaken because it was not written on the card… I asked them to do the general service service as well… I waited a few more days to give them time to do the general service… then I collected the bike… it has some serious chain issue… took it back… they said we have to change the derailer… I said, had the mechanic called me (as I had asked for) then I didn’t need to keep bringing me bike there…

Anyway, took the bike there for the second time. waited for a few days and then collected it… then I noticed it has some break problem… I took it back for the 3rd time and I said, this bike has been serviced recently, why does it have the break problem…

They guy tells me that it has not been serviced. I said I asked for it twice… he kept implying that it is my fault and they have done the right thing… it was my fault that I did not asked for a service…

so after taking my bike there 3 times and waiting for about 3 weeks, they guy tells me that I can book it for a general service (he didn’t even offer to fix it soon, he said wait in the queue)…

Awful customer service… did not even said sorry once for wasting my time… they just blamed me for not asking for a general service and expecting one.

  1. Wonderful service and advice. These bikes are great for a fun physical activity for everybody over 3yrs old. Riding the croc bikes in the strong wind is a challenge. The coffee and donuts are yummmm!

  2. Definitely value for money! We came here for a couple of their famous croc shakes and we were gobsmacked at how massive they were. Lots of toppings, quality ingredients and overall great drinks!

  3. The taste of my shake was extremely artificial, I expected a sorbet but it was some kind of ice cream with a syrup… disappointed, I did not even finish it . Also the guy told me “so, a large shake” and I didn’t realize it but I paid 1$ extra because it was a large one, don’t be like me, focus and say you want a regular one!

  4. Had some amazing shakes there as a birthday treat. Nice location, awesome shakes ($19 each) servers are always friendly and great taste in music. Only down thing was tables could’ve done with a proper clean. Tops were ok, sides were still splashed with various ice cream drips. But we will definitely go back and work our way through the menu ? With names like “Unicorn” you should expect sweet flavours and bright artificial flavours. These are not health shakes ?
