Napier ( NAY-pee-ər; Māori: Ahuriri) is a city on the eastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand and the seat of the Hawke's Bay region. It is a beachside city with a seaport, known for its sunny climate, esplanade lined with Norfolk pines, and extensive Art Deco architecture. Napier is sometimes referred to as the "Nice of the Pacific", although that is largely outdated and a more common nickname is 'The Art Deco Capital of the world'.
The population of Napier is about 67,500 as of June 2023. About 18 km (11 mi) south of Napier is the inland city of Hastings. These two neighbouring cities are often called "The Bay Cities" or "The Twin Cities" of New Zealand, with the two cities and the surrounding towns of Havelock North and Clive having a combined population of 136,290. The City of Napier has a land area of 106 km2 (41 sq mi) and a population density of 540.0 per square kilometre.
Napier is the nexus of the largest wool centre in the Southern Hemisphere, and it has the primary export seaport for northeastern New Zealand – which is the largest producer of apples, pears, and stone fruit in New Zealand. The Hawke's Bay wine region is now the second largest in New Zealand after Marlborough, and grapes grown around Hastings and Napier are sent through the Port of Napier for export. Large amounts of sheep's wool, frozen meat, wood pulp, and timber also pass through Napier annually for export. Smaller amounts of these materials are shipped via road and railway to the large metropolitan areas of New Zealand itself, such as Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton.
Napier is a popular tourist city, with a unique concentration of 1930s Art Deco, and to a lesser extent Spanish Mission, architecture, built after much of the city was razed in the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. It also has one of the most photographed tourist attractions in the country, a statue of the figure in local Ngāti Kahungunu mythology, Pania, on Marine Parade, Pania of the Reef. Thousands of people flock to Napier every February for the Tremains Art Deco Weekend event, a celebration of its Art Deco heritage and history. Other notable tourist events attracting many outsiders to the region annually include F.A.W.C! Food and Wine Classic events, and the Mission Estate Concert at Mission Estate Winery in the suburb of Taradale.

Great Wharf for cruise ships, perfect location to jump off and explore the city without needing a shuttle bus transfer.

If you are arriving here on a cruise ship make sure you check out Mount Maunganui and Main Beach, both are purely stunning. Bring your walking shoes for Mount Maunganui.

Salisbury Wharf at Tauranga Visited on 29/1/2019

Our cruise ship docks at Port of Tauranga.

Once alighted from the ship, my friends and I look for a local tour company to take us around. We do not have any luck, because two ships arrive almost at the same time, and most tourists booked before arrival.

We continue to walk from the almost empty carpark and pass Salisbury Wharf. It is nothing really spectacular, probably the atmosphere may be different in the evening.

I can imagine the wharf is an ideal place to spend time sitting and looking at the ships as they come and go by.

Apparently Salisbury Wharf is a popular fishing spot for kingfish, travelly and sting ray.

Watching the stingray swimming passed, waiting for a great serve of fish and chips, sun shining, the mount as a backdrop, talk about million dollar views, best place in nz.

  1. Amazing, best fish and chips in the area, that’s for sure. Great selection of fish, all cooked fresh. I had the gurnard and snapper, what a treat, so so good. And a great relaxed and local atmosphere, right down by the water where you can see and smell the sea, just perfect!

  2. The fresh fried fish is thin and crispy on the outside mixed with some herbs, and the fish meat is fresh and juicy on the inside. It is currently the number one fish and chips in my heart. The fries are also good, they are freshly cooked and hot. Delicious food and enjoy every moment of life.

  3. The best fish n chips in Tauranga.
Better come early because the place so busy and popular, the fish so fresh and crispy also the chips really good.
Plenty seat, the place clean and tidy.
    Good for family and friends.
Plus you can see the harbour from there.
    I give 5 star ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  4. Fish and chips is nice and hot. The serving is large, one serve of two peice fish andn large chips is enough for two adults.Unfortunately for one of my prices the batter was under cooked. Tomato sauce, Ranch dressing, tartar sauce, and lemon is also available to be bought separately.

  5. Fish and shrimps were so fresh and the batter was light and delicious. However, squid rings were not to our liking as they are not solid like most calamari, but more like squid paste made into ring shapes (at least that was how it tasted). Remember to bring cash if you are tourists, as they do not accept international credit cards.
