How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia
If you have items that you no longer need or use, donating them to an op shop is a great way to give back to your community and help those in need. Op shops, also known as charity shops or thrift stores, accept a wide range of items including clothes, shoes, books, toys, furniture, and home appliances. By donating to an op shop, you are not only reducing waste but also supporting local charities and nonprofit organizations.
Here are some steps to follow when donating to an op shop in Australia:
- Find a local op shop: Use online directories or search engines to find op shops in your area. Look for well-known organizations such as The Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul Society, or Lifeline. These organizations often have multiple op shops across the country.
- Check donation guidelines: Each op shop may have different guidelines and restrictions regarding the items they accept. Visit the website or call the op shop to find out what items they are currently seeking and if there are any restrictions, such as not accepting electronics or large furniture.
- Clean and organize your donations: Before donating, make sure the items are clean and in good condition. Wash clothes, wipe down furniture, and remove any personal belongings.
- Package your donations: Sort and package your donations in boxes or bags. This will help keep them organized and make it easier for the op shop staff to handle and process them.
- Visit the op shop: Take your donations to the op shop during their operating hours. Some op shops may have designated drop-off points, while others may require you to bring the items into the store.
- Fill in a donation form: In some cases, you may be required to fill in a donation form with your contact information. This is optional but can be helpful for the op shop to provide you with a donation receipt for tax purposes.
- Express interest in a tax receipt: If you would like a tax receipt for your donations, let the op shop staff know. They will usually provide you with a receipt or ask for your email address to send one electronically.
- Keep track of your donations: If you plan to claim your donations as a tax deduction, keep a record of the items you donated along with their estimated value. This will come in handy when filing your tax return.

Before wasting big dollars online, seek out your local charity shop, chances are they may have one already for you.a year agoThis is a big shop with many items. Highlights for me are the bag of books for $5 and the large collection of CDs and DVDs.3 years agoI’m honestly not big on op shopping and only go when my grandma visits, when I brought her to this store I found the most amazing loft bed in excellent condition and the price was an absolute bargain.

It’s a good shop, one of the ladies is super rude and was being rude towards another worker there which was off-putting. If you can ignore that while in the shop they usually have great stuff. A few things are overpriced.
Lifeline prices have always been way better than Vinnies, Salvos, Red Cross etc. It’s like they actually want to help poor people or something. Love it.
The budha statue displayed looked like one whole part but turned out to have 2 separate parts but not be sticky taped. When I picked it up without knowing, the upper part came off , fell down and broke. I came to let the cashier lady know and she made me pay for it. It is unfair treatment for customers. They should know how to display it correctly. the upper part is bulky making it easy to fall off. It is like a trick for customers.
Great shop. Clean and tidy very helpful staff
Overly expensive second hand stuff , thats been donated to them in the first place !!! Not what a second hand shop should be at all .
