Treasure Hunting 101: Common Items in Australia’s Op Shops
In Australia, op shops (short for opportunity shops) are a popular destination for bargain hunters looking for second-hand and pre-loved items. These shops often stock a wide variety of products, catering to different needs and preferences. Here are some common products you can find at op shops in Australia:
- Clothing: Op shops are known for their extensive collection of clothing items for men, women, and children. You can find a wide range of styles, sizes, and brands at affordable prices. Whether you are looking for casual wear, formal attire, or vintage fashion, op shops have you covered.
- Accessories: Op shops also offer a selection of accessories such as jewelry, belts, scarves, and bags. These items can complement your outfits or add a unique touch to your style without breaking the bank.
- Homewares: From furniture to kitchenware, op shops often have a variety of homewares that can help you furnish and decorate your home. You can find items like sofas, dining tables, chairs, lamps, cutlery, and small appliances at a fraction of the cost compared to buying them new.
- Books: Op shops are a haven for book lovers, as they usually have a wide range of novels, non-fiction books, children’s books, cookbooks, and more. Whether you are looking for a bestseller or a hidden gem, op shops offer an affordable way to expand your reading collection.
- Toys and Games: Families with young children can find a treasure trove of toys and games at op shops. From board games to puzzles, stuffed animals to action figures, there is something for every child’s imagination and playtime.
- Electronics: While not as common as other items, op shops occasionally have electronic devices such as TVs, DVD players, sound systems, and small kitchen appliances. These items are often donated in working condition and provide an affordable alternative to buying new electronics.
- Sporting Equipment: Whether you are into tennis, golf, cycling, or other sports, op shops often have a selection of sporting equipment available. You can find items like rackets, clubs, balls, helmets, and workout gear at a fraction of the cost.
- Art and Craft Supplies: Op shops can be a great resource for artists and crafters. They often have a range of art supplies such as paints, brushes, canvases, and craft materials like beads, yarn, and fabric. These affordable finds can inspire creativity without breaking the bank.
- Music and Movies: Op shops usually have a selection of CDs, DVDs, and vinyl records for music and movie enthusiasts. You can find popular albums, classic movies, and obscure gems to add to your entertainment collection.
- Antiques and Collectibles: If you enjoy collecting antiques or unique items, op shops can be a treasure trove. You may stumble upon vintage clothing, antique furniture, retro kitchenware, or one-of-a-kind collectible items that add character and charm to your space.

2 months agoItems are way too expensive and being sold for the same price they would have been sold for in their orginal shop. $35 for a second hand jacket orginally sold at aldi for $39. Really sad people can hardly afford to buy from opshops now.7 months agoI actually walked out of this shop without purchasing anything. I’m better off going to buy new things as their around the same price. I understand they have overheads to cover but this is ridiculous. This is all donated stuff. How can people that are hard up for money buy, it’s far too pricy. I’ll go to the new one near Chemist warehouse.3 months agoRecords are over priced $3 for a CD, I think that the store is trying to compete with the salvos for ridiculous prices, better alternative is Vinnie’s Bacchus Marsh and even better is the hospital op shop Bacchus Marsh, cheap clothing and all DVDs 50 cents4 months agoMay as well buy new stuff with their ridiculous prices.50 dollars for a pair of shoes! No!
a year agoPrices are not too bad but some of the blu ray movies are a bit pricey some are like $12 That’s overpriced for me . Some other opshops sell any movie for 2 to 5 bucks regardless of its a bluray or dvd

Went in looking for a candlela which they did have 2 one large and small the large one was rusty $35 by the way, so I ask the staff if I could get it cheaper, she then went looking for the manager which took 10 minutes , then come back and said no! So I asked to see the manager which approached me with an attitude and told me that she was happy with that price, so I said to her you won’t discount for a sale well it’s your problem mind you it was worth $10 NO MORE it was Putrid they don’t even clean things My thoughts how GREEDY that a Donation company salvos has became. I hope it sits there forever. Bad customer service maybe is because they don’t have the Knowledge in a small town.
Its a ok salvos . Most prices are on par to what other salvos are. But some items are so high priced you could almost think you were buying things brand new in a retail store . . Im 53 yrs old and been opshoping since i was about 11 when i lived in richmond i have been to a LOT of salvos and a lot more other non salvo shops.. and salvos by far are the most expensive of them all .
Not much ever here! And totally over priced! Kmart shelves in boxes for $20 each looked online what kmart sells them for and it was $18 each!!!! What are you doing Melton Salvos???
Not to mention absolutely zero customer service, when l walked in a customer had to call over a staff member to serve her!!!! NOTHING CHANGES HERE!!!!!!
It was a pathetic customer service! In fact no service minded! I reached salvos at 4:50PM today and said that I want to donate the lady who answered me on the door was quick to say “we are closed” when I asked again she said “we are closed at 5” I asked her “Is it 5 already” she replied yes well… the donations are closed at 4. What the hell? If you’re not service minded pls don’t work at salvos! I’m restraining myself from posting that employee’s name. Management please act quick!
Pricing is horrible and very greedy considering they get everything for free. bad condition jackets for $35, faux leather target jacket for $50? Packet of 4x 25g mo-hair yarn for $25?? went down to burnside savers the same day and got a pack of 3x 100g mo-hair for $7! greedy greedy.
Not only that but The service is very poor, ive come here a few times and every time i have to wait and wait for service when they are better off at the back or talking right in front of me.
