How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia

Donating to an op shop (short for “opportunity shop”) is a great way to declutter your home and support a charitable cause at the same time. Op shops are non-profit organizations that sell second-hand and donated goods to raise funds for a variety of social and community programs. If you’re looking to donate to an op shop in Australia, here’s how you can do it:

  • Find a nearby op shop: Look for op shops in your local area or use online directories to find the ones closest to you. There are various op shop chains in Australia, such as Vinnies, Salvos Stores, and Lifeline, but there are also smaller independent op shops you can support.
  • Check donation guidelines: Before donating, it’s important to check the op shop’s website or contact them directly to find out what items they accept and any specific guidelines they may have. Some op shops may not accept certain items due to limited storage space or other reasons.
  • Gather your donations: Once you know what items are accepted, gather the items you want to donate. These can include clothing, shoes, accessories, homewares, books, toys, furniture, and electronics. Make sure the items are clean, in good condition, and not damaged.
  • Choose a drop-off location: Most op shops have designated drop-off points where you can bring your donations. These can be the op shop itself, donation bins located in certain areas, or even special events where they collect donations. You can find the drop-off locations and timings on the op shop’s website or by contacting them.
  • Deliver your donations: Pack your donations in bags or boxes, making sure they are secure and won’t be damaged during transportation. Take them to the chosen drop-off location during the specified times. If you have larger items such as furniture, you may need to arrange for a pick-up service if it’s offered by the op shop.
  • Get a receipt: Some op shops provide donation receipts that you can use for tax deductions. Ask for a receipt when dropping off your donations, as this will allow you to claim a deduction for the value of your donated items on your tax return. Keep the receipt for record-keeping purposes.

Ever since its store ‘upgrade’ it has become rubbish. Nothing interesting in there anymore half the stuff that used to be in it.

Tring to be to fancy now, it is so disappointing what ot has become, a shell of what it used to be.

The prices have also become ridiculous. It is more of a business now that a charity shop.

I love the new location and the range in this store! I’ve scored many a bargain at the old and the new location. The new shop however has much more room!

Now for what I came for…. I just joined google mail so I could leave this review to support the wonderful staff (who I believe volunteer their time) there as I am a bit perplexed as to why people would give a negative review about the store because they try to get a decent price for their stock.

The idea of running a charity shop like this would surely be to get the most money for the chosen cause, so saying that the shop should be cheaper and the concept of essentially giving away stock because they got it for free is not only ridiculous but counter productive.

I use to work a few doors down from this store and would see the overpriced second-hand goods in the display windows. I would often shake my head at the asking price for used goods at this store… it’s distasteful to ask for so much for something you received for free. I thought perhaps its better instore… No, it wasn’t. The whole point of the store’s existence is to collect unwanted good and sell it back to the public that can’t afford to buy new. Instead, you sell some items at ‘as new’ prices. You should be ashamed at yourselves. You want to help the community. Introduce the ‘fill the bag’ with clothes for $20.00 dollars. Or something that would help those on a small budget.

And yes, I acknowledge that there are people who are looking for antique bargains, well they aren’t going to find it in your shop! You rob these people of the joy of finding a treasure. You aren’t actually being ripped off if you sell a potential antique, item for less than it’s possible worth BECAUSE YOU GOT IT FOR FREE. Here’s a suggestion, the more stock you move the more money you make!

In my opinion they are quite overpriced. It put me off purchasing anything. Quite a few items were priced more than brand new. LP Records were $5-25 where all all the other stores charge $1-2 for the exact same LP’s. Even heard the lady joke about how heavy handed she is with pricing and thinks she doing great. I spent $0 there, where as I had just spend on average of $40 at the previous 2 Op Shops I had just been to. Store had a good selection and staff seemed nice even though I didn’t interact with them.

  1. Nicely presented Vinnie’s store. The staff are lovely and the selection is vast; clothes, shoes, toys, furniture, books, dvds, bric a bracket and more. The parking is ample and it has eftpos facilities.

  2. Doesn’t take donations. The whole point is to give to people who need it. If you’re “full” instead of being focused on selling things actually find charities who will give the clothes directly to people who need it.

  3. I visited and got some great Bric-a-Brac and kitchen stuff… the place looks better.. staff friendly

Google open hours is wrong… open Sunday 10-1pm
