How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia
Donating to an op shop (opportunity shop) in Australia is a great way to help those in need and declutter your home at the same time. Op shops are run by charities and rely on donations from the community to stock their stores. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to donate to an op shop in Australia:
- Step 1: Sort through your items
Before donating, go through your belongings and separate items that are no longer needed or used. This can include clothing, shoes, accessories, household goods, furniture, books, toys, and more. Make sure items are clean and in good condition. - Step 2: Choose a reputable op shop
Research op shops in your area and find one that supports a cause you believe in. Some well-known op shops in Australia include Vinnies (St Vincent de Paul Society), Salvos (Salvation Army), and Red Cross op shops. - Step 3: Check donation guidelines
Visit the op shop’s website or give them a call to find out their specific donation guidelines. Some op shops have certain items they do not accept, such as electrical goods or large furniture. - Step 4: Transport your donations
Put your donations in bags or boxes, making sure they are securely packed. If you have larger items like furniture, contact the op shop to arrange pick-up or drop-off options. - Step 5: Deliver your donations
Take your donations to the op shop during their opening hours. Most op shops have designated drop-off points or a staff member who can assist you. Make sure to let them know you are donating and follow any instructions they provide. - Step 6: Get a receipt
Ask for a donation receipt when dropping off your items. This will allow you to claim a tax deduction if you choose to do so. Keep the receipt for your records.

4 weeks agoShop opens on Sunday, staffs work hard, but lots of items are faulty, staffs smart level are low than standard, the Curley hair cashier works 1yr + still didn’t know how to process credit note payment, n even Sam did not know what was going & blamed me! The tall female shop supervisor works on Sunday was terrible, I purchased faulty item or missing parts, but she not allowed you to exchange or return, and it was not stated sold as it on the item. none of the shop in Au has such rules, her behaviour was against the consumer law. What are low ethic and low educated people! I will not shop & donate there again.3 years agoAlways able to find something nice in this store and the lady’s are lovely and prices are good ?9 months agoWill forever be my favourite thrift spot, prices are reasonable and a few months ago I found an authentic classic chanel double flap bag worth $18,000! 3 months agoI have been regularly donating my handmade knitted items – for babies, dolls etc. for over a year now. The lady there is/was amazing & very, very appreciative for my donations. But… the other day I dropped off my newly knitted items & the lady wasn’t there, a younger girl was there instead. She had absolutely no interest in talking to me, she couldn’t even make eye contact with me. She was so much more concerned with what her children were doing than attending to a customer donating goods.I’m sorry but I will be taking my goods elsewhere.

5 Replies to Op Shop 101: The Top 9 Biggest in Frankston
We popped into this shop to have a look around as we were in the neighbourhood. Once inside, I was absolutely blown away by the shop. It is a huge 2 storey shop but what blew me away was the way the shop was set up. What was awesome was also a section for folks interested in memorabilia. Apart from the traditional clothing and cutlery and kitchen stuff, this shop had a wide range of used furniture, kids stuff and large walls of art being hung up. We loved the place.
What a great store! Lots of things to buy in clear sections. As well as upstairs in particular being well decorated, as per the attached picture.
The staff were so kind & helpful as well, I felt very welcomed into the shop.
I don’t shop at the salvos as it’s actually too expensive for me. I go to the rspca or little opshops where everything is literally $10 and under! But this is one of the worst stores I have been too for customer service. The short old blonde lady is beyond me. When I go into the change rooms, she follows me and when I come out, she’s there telling me she will take the clothes! It’s like she thinks I’m going to steal them. Last time I was there they were selling damaged handbags. They were $15 each. Then I have to get them repaired. I said I will give them $5 each, it was flat out no. I walked out. So I contacted them through fb and they stood by it. Donated and damaged items sold back to us at inflated prices, I may as well shop in Myers.
I will never ever donate to the salvos again rude staff nothing is clean and they won’t even take $5 off anything these goods are donated I realise they do use money to help the people in need etc but think most money goes in wages won’t be back anyway can buy cleaner and better goods elsewhere
Will not call them an opportunity shop more like Myers but then again Myers are probably cheaper these stores need to go back in time back to basics and stop trying to be like specialised retro shops with exorbitant price will not even take a dollar off overpriced items maybe the wages for staff once volunteers are putting there costs off the show will not be back will support the smaller old school shops from now on
