The population as of the 2021 census was 169,312, having grown on average 1.02% annually over the preceding five years. The city is the 5th-most-populous in Queensland, and 15th in Australia.The city was founded in 1876 and named after Sir William Wellington Cairns, following the discovery of gold in the Hodgkinson river. Throughout the late 19th century, Cairns prospered from the settlement of Chinese immigrants who helped develop the region's agriculture. Cairns also served as a port for blackbirding ships, which crews transported slaves and indentured labourers to the sugar plantations of Innisfail. During World War II, the city became a staging ground for the Allied Forces in the Battle of the Coral Sea. By the late 20th century the city had become a centre of international tourism. In the early 21st century it has developed into a major metropolitan city. The economy of Cairns is based primarily on tourism, healthcare and education, along with a major capacity in aviation, marine and defence industries. The city has a gross regional product at about $10.2 billion. The city is served by Cairns International Airport, the seventh busiest airport in Australia. Cairns also has a major cruise ship industry servicing both domestic and international markets, with terminals at Cairns Seaport and Cairns Wharf Complex. Cairns is a major tourist destination, with access to two UNESCO world heritage sites; the Daintree Rainforest as part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland, and the Great Barrier Reef, one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

    Trinity beach is beautiful. We were here for a little holiday and we didn’t want to leave, even though it rained most days.

    The beach has trees along the shoreline, great if you want to escape the sun.

    You can only swim within the enclosure which is quite bit and has enough room for everyone. The reason for this is the chance of crocodile and jelly fish in the water.

    This is a small beach town, it only had 5 restaurants, a small supermarket and a couple of shops, so make sure you come prepared having done your food shopping, toiletries and medicine.

    There’s a small shopping complex within Trinity Beach, if you are walking it’s about 25 min and by car, maybe only 5-10 min, but there you will find a bigger supermarket and an amazing bakery, a GP and a pharmacy.

    All in all, trinity beach is amazing if you are looking for a peaceful holiday. Most restaurants close around 9-10pm and then it’s dead quiet.

    Lovely beachside, whether for a walk, a swim or a picnic like what we did for Australia Day. Lots of restaurants around to have a cold drink and/or something to eat.

    I really liked this beach. Great to relax on & walk along too. It has a area roped off for swimming with life guard.

    One of my favourite beaches in Cairns. It has lots of shaded grass areas to relax out of the sun. There are life guards and it has a stinger net. BBQ and seating areas. There are some nice restaurants to eat along the esplanade as well. There is a playground at the north end for the kids.

    Super beach with a great walk and safe swimming, heaps of eateries along the front.

  2. Surely one of the best beaches across Australia. While there are signs – if you swim between the flags forget about crocodiles, and stingers are not an issue. Fantastic sand for the kids to build their castles, excellent facilities always nearby (toilets, drinking water fountains, showers, tables, BBQs), ample natural shading from trees within 10m from the water edge and plenty of free parking available. Can’t fault this beach in any way, for us only wish it was closer as it is quite far to get to from Victoria.

  4. Beautiful beachside tropical tourist destination. Not spoiled by the modernisation like other areas. Very beautiful and shady with palms and original trees. High end accommodation choices, numerous food and drink options. Chemist, fashion, groceries and post office. Stinger enclosure for safe swimming in the beautiful blue Coral Sea.
