This is a wonderful beach with beautiful white sand. If you like hunting for shells, this is probably not your kind of beach. But it is perfect for laying out and catching some rays, or wading close to shore. A lifeguard is on duty, but you have to stay fairly close to their station. I heard this was New Zealand’s top rated beach. It was sure beautiful!

A very pretty almost white beach, the beach stretches for miles, so it’s nice for a walk. You can ride a horse on the beach and if you like fish, you can catch it yourself very well. With cloudy weather it is very beautiful, specialy the skies, so bring your camera.

  1. This is an amazing beach. White sand, clear blue water and gentle waves. It really is paradise. There are some rocky areas to explore and hidden coves with their very own white sand. You can hike to the Mermaid Pool if you have the desire.

  2. This place make you fall in love with New Zealand as it preserves the true beauty of natural NZ beaches! Highly recommended! You will be blown away! Mermaid pools is also a must see which is a 15min hike away from Matapouri beach.

  3. One of the best beaches I’ve ever been to! Absolutely gorgeous with clear water and soft sand. It was busy when I went, but there was lots of room (and if you’re willing to walk a bit you can get to a quieter part of the beach). I drove up for the day from Auckland (3hours+) and would definitely do that again on a nice day!

  4. Beauuuuutiful!! Nice parking just next to the beach. Can have a lunch with a view. Also 2/3 self contained van camping spots, would recommend to stay there if you have enough time and there is place available. Very clean and nice beach. There is small shop nearby too – for ice cream or same food. To get there road is up and downhills, but it’s worth it!
