a month agoBasic room, good mattress, bathroom was simple but new ish and felt clean. They are doing work on the place and all the improvements are nice. Kitchen was nice and new ish. Everything felt clean except for the plugs and carpet that ether need a industrial clean or to be replaced. But nothing was so awful that it was uncomfortable. Wish they would buy a charging tower for the room. Lovely quiet, calm atmosphere to the place. I would go back if I was heading through Hamilton.3 months agoRooms were spacious, clean, with an ac unit, no windows to open so could get quite warm in the summer. Communal cooking facilities and living area again pretty clean. I did think the price for the hostel was quite expensive.2 months agoDidn’t even stay 5 minutes. Room was not as advertised. Smelt and everywhere generally unclean looking / feeling and smelly. Dingy creepy, not at all acceptable. They’d even turned the reception into what looks like a living space for the manager?? Do not recommend.2 months agoOne of the most pleasant backpackers I’ve stayed in NZ for the past 1 year. Mr AJ, Ragul, and the team are very welcoming, friendly and helpful! The room and common areas are kept clean and tidy. This place is less than 10mins walk to Transport centre, less than 5mins walk to Pak n Save, and plenty of eateries just across the road.
2 months agoI’ve stayed in many hostels and this by far was the worst. Not even worth the price we paid in our opinion. the hostel almost seems like it has two different area. Downstairs rooms had a secure entrance after being in the entrance and it was bright and pretty decent from what we could tell. Unfortunately we were placed upstairs. The hallways were narrow, dirty, very smelly and pretty dark too. Kind of creepy actually. Our room looked nothing like the add (which ok I know it wouldn’t be the same but like it was WAY off). It was so dirty. There was broken and nasty furniture in there. It smelled. The window was covered in like dirt or mole. The AC made a terrible noise, and I took one look at those remotes for the tv and ac And NASTY. There were also missing baseboards all around the room which made us wonder if the place had a nasty bed bug problem at some point. The bathrooms had no TP. One stall was locked because it was broken but it continued to just leak water all over the place. Showers were icky too…
We looked for hours for a different place to stay with no luck. We inquired about moving to a rom downstairs and the guy at reception was pretty rude and just gave us a “no”.
I’ll give location a bonus because it wasn’t far from the bus station and stuff but overall would not recommend this place to anyone.

Location is fantastic, right in the city centre. Parking right behind the hotel costs $20 day which is reasonable, and the guy that checked us suggested parking on road for free as it was a public holiday.
Overall the building is fairly shabby. Had the feel of something that would have been fancy 50 years ago but now is old and tired. Don’t use the stairs, there was a rank smell right up the stairwell, made us feel a little suck. Room was clean and bed was comfy. Heat pump kept the room warm, but a little extra bedding would have been nice. Only green tea but no normal tea seemed odd.
Staff were super friendly and helpful, and overall we left pretty happy.
Stayed for four nights.
Comfortable bed good size room.
Didn’t really sleep that well due to street noise.
Great location if you like going out at night as restaurants and bars are just outside.
Positive: Close distance to a wide range of local shops and restaurants. The staff were pleasant to interact with. The room size was very large and the bathroom was very large.
Negatives: There was restricted airflow in the large room. We left the AC unit on for several hours, this did not adequately cool down the room. Upon opening windows, the windows opened to a small alley between the two buildings, this later amplified the noise when bins were collected during the early morning.
Whilst arriving for check-in (around 4pm), the staff informed us that there was no more parking, and then proceeded to make the recommendation of parking in neighbouring businesses allocated spots or the metered spots after 6pm or parking in a paid secured parking area around the corner.
The last photo is of a nitrous oxide bottle on the floor of the outdoor seating area near the stairwell exit. Pretty much summaries this review.
The room and the bed were lovely. The downside of the room was the bathroom. The tiles on the floor were chipped and the toilet was almost overflowing. The shower/bath had a very slippery floor and I nearly fell over.
Also did not state the incidental charge upon check in
Would not recommend this hotel very depressing. limited car parks that you have to pay for which I think is disgusting we got there and they told us to move our vehicle somewhere else as all the parks were already paid for. Dude behind the counter seemed like he didn’t want to be there. The room had a very musty smell to it like the carpet had been wet for a while and not cleaned everything in the room was very basic and quite old. Is sad to see as I think this place has awesome potential with the right owners.
