Melbourne ( MEL-bərn; Boonwurrung/Woiwurrung: Narrm or Naarm) is the capital of the Australian state of Victoria and the second-most populous city in Australia, after Sydney (although the most populous by contiguous urban area). Its name generally refers to a 9,993 km2 (3,858 sq mi) metropolitan area known as Greater Melbourne, comprising an urban agglomeration of 31 local municipalities, although the name is also used specifically for the local municipality of City of Melbourne based around its central business area. A short-lived penal settlement was built in 1803 at Port Phillip, then part of the British colony of New South Wales. However, it was not until 1835, with the arrival of free settlers from Van Diemen's Land (modern-day Tasmania), that Melbourne was founded. It was incorporated as a Crown settlement in 1837, and named after William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, who was then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. In 1851, four years after Queen Victoria declared it a city, Melbourne became the capital of the new colony of Victoria. During the 1850s Victorian gold rush, the city entered a lengthy boom period that, by the late 1880s, had transformed it into one of the world's largest and wealthiest metropolises. After the federation of Australia in 1901, Melbourne served as the interim seat of government of the new nation until Canberra became the permanent capital in 1927.     Love the vibe here. Easy access via tram (for tourist). You can get really good foods like seafood, pastries, coffee here! As their closing time is 4pm, the foods in most of the popular food store might sold out around 3 or 3:30. So be there earlier ?

    Popular with locals and tourists. Wide variety of fresh seafood, meat, cheeses and pasta and many other things like shops selling pots and pans, florists, clothing. The eateries offered a great variety of food too.

    In every country there’s bound to be a market and eatery crowd and tourist magnet. In Melbourne CBD, this is one of a handful of them that’s worth a visit. Don’t be daunted by the crowd. Walk around and savour the smell of whatever is cooking or buy whatever produce that’s in season. Good accessibility with public transport nearby. Dine in the food hall or alfresco.

    I prefer the Victoria Farmers market. This one was a bit too small and seemed overly focused on goods instead of foods and agricultural products.

    I like it because you can find and support the entrepreneurs and small business owners but the main food market was like a grocery store and then the other food sales and some small goods shops and restaurants weren’t accessible from the inside, you had to circle the building to get to them.

    The mall section and a seafood restaurant and coffee shop they had were really nice. I’d say stick with Victoria Farmers Market if trying to decide. But both are better than only supporting Coles and Woolworths.

  1. definitely a must-do if you’re around town! plenty of things to eat and shop ranging from clothes to kitchenware to souvenirs to fresh local harvests!! the market is pretty big and widespread with directional signs over each aisle to guide you. i would suggest allocating at least 2-3hr to properly enjoy the market.

  2. The place was amazing with a large selections of food, drinks and groceries. They had delicious sweets and cheeses. We ate so much and we could not wait to go back the next day. The prices were very reasonable and the people very nice.

  3. This market is awesome. There truly is something for everyone here. From cooked foods to butchers and green grocers. From souvenirs to clothes and other cool stuff, it’s a great place with a great vibe!

    The summer night market is also very good! Lots of brilliant food to choose from which cater to a wide variety of dietary preferences and needs! The live music also adds to the great atmosphere!

  4. Always an exciting place to visit. Be it for regular shopping. Or the summer Wednesday nights market. So many different foods to try. So many great gift, souvenir stalls. Always well worth a visit.

  5. You can find everything in this market. The place is clean and accessible. It’s well distributed and it’s a big market. Prices are good! I recommend you to go at 1:30 pm or 2 pm because prices are better at that time. You’ll find an Italian bakery inside which smells delicious and the bread is outstanding.
    All products are fresh and there is a huge variety of fruit and veggies.
