USS Yorktown (CV-5) was an aircraft carrier that served in the United States Navy during World War II. Named after the Battle of Yorktown in 1781, she was commissioned in 1937. Yorktown was the lead ship of the Yorktown class, which was designed on the basis of lessons learned from operations with the converted battlecruisers of the Lexington class and the smaller purpose-built USS Ranger.
Yorktown was at port in Norfolk during the attack on Pearl Harbor, having just completed a patrol of the Atlantic Ocean. She then sailed to San Diego in late December 1941 and was incorporated as the flagship of Task Force 17. Together with the carrier Lexington, she successfully attacked Japanese shipping off the east coast of New Guinea in early March 1942. Her aircraft sank or damaged several warships supporting the invasion of Tulagi in early May. Yorktown rendezvoused with Lexington in the Coral Sea and attempted to stop the invasion of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. They sank the light aircraft carrier Shōhō on 7 May during the Battle of the Coral Sea, but did not encounter the main Japanese force of the carriers Shōkaku and Zuikaku until the next day. Aircraft from Lexington and Yorktown badly damaged Shōkaku, but the Japanese aircraft critically damaged Lexington (which was later scuttled), and damaged Yorktown.
Despite the damage suffered, Yorktown was able to return to Hawaii. Although estimates were that the damage would take two weeks to repair, Yorktown put to sea only 72 hours after entering drydock at Pearl Harbor, which meant that she was available for the next confrontation with the Japanese. Yorktown played an important part in the Battle of Midway in early June. Yorktown's aircraft played crucial roles in sinking two Japanese fleet carriers. Yorktown also absorbed both Japanese aerial counterattacks at Midway which otherwise would have been directed at the carriers USS Enterprise and Hornet. On 4 June, during the Battle of Midway, Japanese aircraft crippled Yorktown. She lost all power and developed a 23-degree list to port. Salvage efforts on Yorktown were encouraging, and she was taken in tow by USS Vireo. In the late afternoon of 6 June, the Japanese submarine I-168 fired a salvo of torpedoes, two of which struck Yorktown, and a third sinking the destroyer USS Hammann, which had been providing auxiliary power to Yorktown. With further salvage efforts deemed hopeless, the remaining repair crews were evacuated from Yorktown, which sank on the morning of 7 June. The wreck of Yorktown was located in May 1998 by Robert Ballard.

Have been continuously going there but the AC is just not what I wanted like it should be cold and not hot and the projection of the movies weren’t going well. Also there should be more than 1 cinema in Port Moresby, like maybe 2 or 3.It should be strict, like no taking out your phone snaping yourself while the movie is on,like we want a dark room with no lights.Otherwise it’s great the movies are okay and the food??

Need to fix projector and ac. Screen became too bright and then too dark on its own. Not sure if that was on purpose but ruined the film. AC kept going on and off in its own aswell.

Overall I’d say they do deliver.. The seats are comfortable and well ventilated. The only downsides are the price of the snacks and beverages and a new projector would be a great upgrade

The staff were kind and helpful. However, they don’t have a 3D cinema anymore. Some movies need to be experienced in 3D.

  1. This is by far the best hotel in town, but probably just above average if compared with big international hotel chain. Keep in mind this is Papua New Guinea, and Lae we are speaking of so I am not going to rate this the same with some fancy Marriott, IHG or Hilton hotel brand which I have all stayed and accquired high tier status. If you are here for work or just visiting which I doubt there is any since tourism is non-existent, this is the only choice in town given the hotel’s location, security and overall level of service, there is no comparison. Now Lae Internarional Hotel has been around since 1987, so it’s showing a bit of age, but service is top-notch. Food is actually pretty good, though don’t expect anything fancy. What they offer may be what I would call predictable, but for that, they did it well, just not Michelin level stuff. Burger, pizza, and causal dining type of dishes are on par but not spectacular… If I have one thing to complain about, it would be the room, it looks very dated, and WIFI is spotty, if your room is not close to the main hotel lobby, then good luck. Have to anchor myself in the hotel restaurant to get a decent signal.

  2. Lae international hotel is located in lae top town so in terms of accessibility it is definitely the place to book in if you have meetings in and around town or if you would like to visit public government offices.

  3. My recent experience at Lae International Hotel was quite disappointing. I was on a business trip and decided to have dinner at their outdoor bar area for some fresh air. However, my colleague and I were denied entry because we were wearing flip flops. This seemed quite arbitrary and unfair, as there were no explicit dress code rules mentioned beforehand.

Instead, we were directed to the restaurant by the entrance, where we had to wait for nearly an hour to be seated. The wait time for meals was equally frustrating, and the level of service was subpar. It was clear that the staff was overwhelmed and understaffed, which resulted in long delays and a lack of attentive service.

In conclusion, I would not recommend dining at Lae International Hotel if you’re looking for a pleasant and efficient dining experience. The strict dress code policy and the lengthy wait times for meals showcase a lack of customer-centric approach and attention to detail. It would be wise to explore other dining options in the area to avoid similar disappointments.

  4. I recently visited Kokomo restaurant at Lae International Hotel and was impressed by its classic and elegant ambiance. The recent renewal has elevated the overall look and feel, creating a very clean and inviting atmosphere. The staff was friendly, adding to the positive experience. We opted for the seafood pizza, a generous family-sized portion priced at 80 Kina. The pizza was delicious, with a perfect blend of flavors. The combination of a refined setting, amiable service, and tasty dishes make Kokomo a standout choice in Lae. A wonderful place for those seeking a delightful dining experience.
