Vegetation is unique.a month agoWell worth spending a day here. Easy 1.5h drive up from Noumea in the morning. Head to Pont Perignon and rent a bike from there, and go up the gorgeous 12km trails to see rivers, forests, and delightful cagus! Options for e-bikes and shuttles too. The staff on the reserve are very kind and helpful.4 months agoAbsolutely unreal. The forest is amazing. We biked and kayaked in the worst weather imaginable and still had an outstanding day. We saw 4 cagou which was extra special. I would recommend this place for the natural wonders; it’s spectacular.

5 Replies to Discover the Biggest National Park in Nouméa, New Caledonia
Nice large park to take a walk, but nothing too fancy regarding the animals. In particular the cages are quite basic and not really pretty. Petting zoo seems to be closed and has been for some time. In face of the small fee it might be worth a visit, but Nouméa has much better attractions if you have limited time. E.g. the Lagoon aquarium was otherworldly compared to this park/zoo.
Managed to squeeze in a brief park walk on our last day & if you like beautiful plants and ample foliage to provide shade this is a great place to chill out – bring a picnic lunch there are lots of spots to settle on but no feeding the animals!!
It was nice that the endemic fauna are close enough to really appreciate as I don’t think a cagou in the wild would have let us get so close.
That said, some of the bird enclosures are a bit small though & we only checked out the endemic section so we never witnessed what others have mentioned about mammals being kept in very confined spaces which possibly exist in other sections.
It’s quite hilly and the further you descend the longer you’ll inevitably need to ascend so keep this in mind if walking on inclines or declines are problematic.
Would loved to have spent longer & made a half day of it
It’s a small park, but it has some picnic areas and many local birds and other animals.
Also several scenic overlooks.
Good for small children.
This is a great experience for the whole family. The park is huge and there’s much more than just the animals, with beautiful forest walks and areas to explore. Some of the birds could probably do with some larger enclosures, but they do all look very well cared for. We had a great time, even in terrible rainy weather.
