What to Consider When Visiting an Op Shop in Central Coast
When going to a thrift store in Australia, there are several factors to consider to ensure a successful and enjoyable shopping experience. These include:
- Location: Research and choose a thrift store that is conveniently located for you. Consider factors such as proximity, parking availability, and ease of access.
- Store Reputation: Look for thrift stores that have positive reviews and a good reputation. This will increase your chances of finding high-quality items and a well-organized store.
- Opening Hours: Check the store’s opening hours to ensure that they align with your schedule. Some thrift stores only operate for a few hours or specific days of the week.
- Donation Policies: Find out if the thrift store accepts donations and what their policies are. Knowing what items they accept and their condition requirements can help you determine if you have items to donate as well.
- Price Range: Have a budget in mind and consider the thrift store’s price range. While thrift stores generally offer affordable prices, some may be more expensive than others.
- Payment Options: Check what payment options the store accepts. Most thrift stores accept cash, but some may also accept card payments.
- Special Sales and Discounts: Keep an eye out for special sales and discount events. Many thrift stores offer regular promotions that can help you save even more money.
- Seasonal Items: Consider the season when planning your thrift store visit. Thrift stores often have seasonal items available, such as winter clothing in colder months or beach gear in summer.
- Store Layout: Once inside the thrift store, take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the layout. This can help you navigate the store more easily and find the items you are looking for.
- Inspect Items: When browsing through items, it’s important to thoroughly inspect them for any damages or defects. While thrift stores generally check items before putting them out for sale, it’s always good to double-check.
By considering these factors when going to a thrift store in Australia, you can enhance your shopping experience and increase your chances of finding unique and affordable items.

I was in with my nan and they were a little rude When she enquired about some items and if anymore would be put out. 5 Replies to Op Shop 101: The Top 10 Biggest in Central Coast
Very well organised…parking right out front. Lovely staff. A good range of kitchen, china… clothes arranged by size and category…spacious…not a lot of furniture .. and money you spend hours to a great cause. Drop off around the back with clear info as to what is useful ..with parking.
I had some good quality pieces of furniture which I was unable to store in a way that would protect them from the weather. I could easily have sold them, however I decided to donate them instead. With the current situation with COVID-19, my wife and I felt that people were in more need than ever. I spent an hour and a half cleaning them well and then loaded them into my trailer to take to the Salvos Store. I had been called to an emergency job so I took the furniture to drop it off on the way. Before doing so, I checked the Salvos Store West Gosford website and saw that it stated that it was open.
When I arrived at the store, I was briskly told by the male staff member that the store was closed. When I showed him that the website said it was open, he very rudely said “I don’t care what the website says – the store is closed”. I was obviously frustrated that I had gone to the effort to clean and load the furniture (some of which was heavy) to then be treated with rudeness. If he had been polite and understanding I would have accepted the situation. When I told him that I had gone to some effort and travelled some way with the furniture, he actually threatened to notify the police that I had travelled more than 5 kilometres so that they could issue me with a fine! When I informed him that the restrictions allow a person to travel anywhere within their local government area or 5km (whichever is greater), rather than apologise or say he would check, he again told me he didn’t care!
I then asked him if he could let Salvos management know that their website incorrectly states that they are open in order to help other people thinking of donating. His response was a very rude “NO” and “YOU CALL THEM!”
In the end with a very surly manner he took the donations.
I have never been treated so rudely and even threatened by someone who was ignorant of facts. It has made me reluctant to donate to this store again.
Don’t bother donating furniture. They don’t accept anything unless it is absolutely perfect. Even perfect things they don’t accept. We wanted to donate two lovely dining chairs in perfect condition but the wouldn’t accept them because their wasn’t 6 of them.
So don’t bother donating furniture to them. Give them to a charity that wants and can use it.
Amazing helpful staff!!! Asked for a 70’s retro top and she found one straight away. Great price as well ($3)
Prices have risen. Aren’t they suppose to be there to offer things at a better price. They get the merchandise for free. So why the price rise
