Treasure Hunting 101: Common Items in Australia’s Op Shops
Op shops, or op(tional) shops, in Australia are a treasure trove of hidden gems and bargains. These thrift stores not only provide affordable options for those on a budget, but they also offer a sustainable way to shop by giving pre-loved items a new lease on life. Here are some common products you can find at op shops in Australia:
- Clothing: Op shops are known for their wide selection of clothing items, including shirts, dresses, pants, and jackets. Whether you’re looking for everyday basics or unique vintage pieces, you’re likely to find something that suits your style at an op shop.
- Homeware: From kitchen appliances and utensils to decorative items and furniture, op shops often have a variety of homeware products. You may stumble upon vintage tea sets, retro lamps, or even antique furniture pieces.
- Books: Op shops are a book lover’s paradise, with shelves filled with different genres and authors. You can find anything from best-selling novels to cookbooks, self-help books, and children’s stories.
- Toys and Games: Op shops are a treasure trove for children’s toys and games. You can find puzzles, stuffed animals, board games, and even outdoor play equipment at affordable prices.
- Electronics: Op shops often have a section dedicated to electronics, where you can find items such as phones, cameras, laptops, and audio equipment. While these items may be second-hand, they can still be in good working condition.

4 months agoLady was being nice to my mum and when she turned her back then loudly said “watch out for that one” to her coworker (she basically yelled it) when she had no reason to suspect her doing wrong. Made my mum pretty upset when I told her and now she refuses to go. (that’s the only store she can afford) she needed a pot and pan for cooking and now she has to have microwaved food, in a roach infested house.2 years agoThis vinnies is totttaàaaaaaallllllyyyyy groovy. Everytime I go in there it is inspirational . Being a bit of an artist I look for items to either upscale or pull apart for the fabric to use on my artworks. Good clothing in very good condition. Furniture, kitchen gear aaaannndd some crafting stuff. Always looking for crafting stuff. Excellent pricing too. The staff are awesome. There were two ladies today that gave me a good chuckle. There is also a place attached where you can get some help from but you need to make an appointment. Very wheelchair friendly. Only one disable park. However worth the look. Always fun in there.10 months agoNice variety and a very well kept shop.A bit pricy for an Op shop , use to be good value for money.3 years ago“We are a lay Catholic organisation working towards a more just and compassionate society”There is nothing just or compassionate about this store.
Horrible “staff” who follow you around as if you are a thief. Same person also took it upon herself to tell my child off for touching the necklaces after I had just asked her not to touch.
5 years agoWow being accused for stealing a bow tie and to be so rude about it lucky for the lovely lady who knew we had actually paid!!! to the young staff member check your attitude! very rude u made our son cry, maybe be sure before accusing people of theft we even had a receipt shame on you really check your attitude before working or volunteering for the businesses best interest not a good way for customer service at all very disappointed.

4 months agoThe woman who served my dad and I that was working on the 1st of May at 2-3:00pm was extremely rude. My dad assumed that the socks that he was paying for was $6 dollars but it was $8.75 and the woman corrected him, but not in a nice way. “Maybe if you opened your eyes and looked at the price you would see that the price was 8.75” I was confused at why she thought that her saying that was a good idea because it wasn’t, especially since saying that to a customer.. like why was that needed? My dad chuckled awkwardly and then we both walked out. Considering it’s Good Sammy’s I would’ve THOUGHT that customer service would be better but it isn’t.3 months agoNot many interesting items there, and I donated to two red ruby glass and Female volunteer said: This is Beautiful. And I said: thank you, she has a very lovely words.8 months agoA fantastic store with lovely staff! Great range of items to shop and so well laid out. The outside isn’t much to look at, but inside is an op shopper’s delight!4 years agoMy favourite in Bunbury. Easy parking, great range of 2nd hand clothing, accessories and household items in great condition, neatly presented at very reasonable prices with friendly staff and volunteers – next to The Salvos Store if you can’t find what you’re looking for in this convenient location.2 years agoThe tall lady with white short hair was so rude to us when we walk in. Even my 7 year old was taken back, I have never met anyone with that attitude in any OP shops in Perth!

5 Replies to Op Shop 101: The Top 9 Biggest in Bunbury
Salvos, Vinnie’s, Good Sammy’s are all the same. People come to your stores to get second hand clothing but we sure don’t expect the clothing to be $25-$30 dollars for clothes. The clothing back in 2015 was at a reasonable price, $5 dollars for second hand goodies not for $25 dollars. It’s disappointing and not very kind on others.
I only shop at opshops (For clothes). Got the shorts and print for $10 which was surprising as there was once a jacket priced at $180 at the old CBD Salvos. Bring back old school opshops hey???
I saw on Wii Console & games it’s cost $99 for all of it. The desk and furnitures it’s really Expensive unbelievable prices, and the staffs are super friendly volunteers.
I saw a wee painting on the wall unpriced (the others around it were $7-$10). But when I asked they took it away, googled, and said it was collectible and they couldn’t sell to me as they now wanted to auction it online! That obviously didn’t make for a satisfying shopping experience.
I was angry at the lack of good deals at the front, so I snuck in through an open staff door and began sorting through the new stock. Unfortunately I tripped and fell into a large pile of clothing, which swallowed me whole. I was then trapped underneath layers and layers of sweaters and huge jeans – FOR SIX HOURS. A teenage employee lifted up a turtleneck and screamed when she saw my face. Confusing but sort of relaxing experience. no good deals found.
