Top Art Gallery in Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is the principal public gallery in Auckland, New Zealand. It has the most extensive collection of national and international art in New Zealand and frequently hosts travelling international exhibitions.
Set below the hilltop Albert Park in the central-city area of Auckland, the gallery was established in 1888 as the first permanent art gallery in New Zealand.
The building originally housed both the Auckland Art Gallery and the Auckland public library, and opened with collections donated by benefactors Governor Sir George Grey and James Tannock Mackelvie. This was the second public art gallery in New Zealand, after the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, which opened three years earlier in 1884. Wellington's New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts opened in 1892 and a Wellington Public Library in 1893.
In 2009, it was announced that the museum received a donation from American businessman Julian Robertson, valued at over $100 million, the largest ever of its kind in the region. The works will be received from the owner's estate.

This is a world class facility. The building is worth visiting irrespective of what is on display. They don’t have a permanent collection so it changes constantly but they do have some really fabulous offerings.

Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery is an absolute gem! This is the place to come to if you want to experience new and contemporary art. They change their exhibits and installations often, to make every visit fresh and interesting.

Your personal taste will inform the visit. Some contemporary installation are brilliantly inspired and inspiring, and showcases local New Zealand history and artists. Although I could appreciate the passion and effort that went into creating those works of art, I just didn’t “get” some of the pieces.

The building itself is an architectural marvel. It also offers beautiful outside views, displaying the wooded areas and the harbour as art itself.

    Well worth a visit!

Although it’s a small art gallery, it offers a variety of art pieces on display. The art building itself has interesting history.

I am in love! This gallery is spacious, 5 leveled and filled with stunning, engaging art. There is even a rooftop terrace to take beautiful, scenic photos and take a moment to admire the nature around you.

Te Uru is a wonderful contemporary art gallery. Highest recommendation. This is the place to come to in order to experience exciting new art. The building is a brilliant example of Judy Stout and David Mitchell’s architecture. Here’s some close up photos of the architecture’s careful detailing. Wonderful staff.

  1. Beautiful small museum. Mix of NZ and European art, contemporary and not so contemporary. Free entry, nice cafe. Stroll into Albert Park which is right behind the museum and a good place to sit in the sun (if there is any) and relax a bit after your visit to the museum

  2. Beautiful open space, great collection gallery and enjoyed the visiting costume exhibition however found the cafe shutting an hour earlier than the gallery (and food stopping an hour before that, and cash acceptance) a bit frustrating. Consistent closing across the whole space and services would be desirable. Loved the children’s active gallery space too it was equal parts engaging and fun

  3. Immersive and inspiring – Auckland Art Gallery is a treasure trove of creativity. The diverse collection of artworks, both classic and contemporary, is displayed in a space that invites contemplation and wonder. Each gallery offers a new perspective, making every visit a unique experience. A vibrant cultural hub that’s a must-visit for art lovers and the curious alike!

  4. A really lovely gallery. My only criticism is that the cafe overlooks the street rather than the park at the back. It does mean (at the time of our visit) the terrace at the back was fairly quiet and you could hear the birds sing in the trees. A daft comment would also be, that if you want to sit on the terrace seating, don’t wear shorts, or have something to sit on… They’re not really made for naked summer legs! ?
We paid to see the Guo Pei exhibition which was beautifully laid out with plenty of room between exhibits.
The shop is also really nice with some lovely souvenirs of NZ and the exhibitions for both the out of towners and the locals.
