Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is the principal public gallery in Auckland, New Zealand. It has the most extensive collection of national and international art in New Zealand and frequently hosts travelling international exhibitions.
Set below the hilltop Albert Park in the central-city area of Auckland, the gallery was established in 1888 as the first permanent art gallery in New Zealand.
The building originally housed both the Auckland Art Gallery and the Auckland public library, and opened with collections donated by benefactors Governor Sir George Grey and James Tannock Mackelvie. This was the second public art gallery in New Zealand, after the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, which opened three years earlier in 1884. Wellington's New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts opened in 1892 and a Wellington Public Library in 1893.
In 2009, it was announced that the museum received a donation from American businessman Julian Robertson, valued at over $100 million, the largest ever of its kind in the region. The works will be received from the owner's estate.

Very cute gallery and cafe combo! A fun space to enjoy a morning drink while out for a stroll.

The shop has lots of beautiful jewellery and art pieces, baby clothes and toys, cards and books.

A beautiful building with lots of culture and creative products to explore, but the coffee was too sour for our liking.

The saying about doing one thing, and doing it well, is apt for the Red Café. What they do superbly is bagels. And with so many options, you’ll never get bored. Team that with good coffee, a lovingly curated gallery of art and gorgeous creations, and you’ll be replete.

  1. Was actually quite impressed with this gallery, it’s on the small side (4 rooms I believe) but each was unique. Manny the Moa exhibit was my favourite by far! You can purchase a Moa for $400 to add your own personal name to the exhibit

The cafe on site is also nice, big windows over looking the gardens. They do table service. The tea for 2 is just 2 pots though, so if you’re splitting with someone it’s better just to each get the tea you actually want since there’s no discount for tea for 2 vs tea for 1

The gift shop here is also fantastic! A great selection of kiwi artists and art!!

  2. The Suter Gallery is not just a place of Art and creativity but also a place of peace and, without even leaving the building, a culinary delight! From today until March 2024 it’s hosting the ‘Fire and earth’ exhibition showing the finest clay and porcelain art from the north of the South Island?

  3. Nice little galley! Complementary – that’s really nice giving access for free to a place like that!

Very nice little cafe with beautiful views. Lamb pie was really great.

  4. Every time I go home to Nelson from OZ I pop in here. It has never let me down. The art is always wonderful and it’s a pleasure to view. The Maori and other culture are brilliant. The Cafe has been in the past and is now still the yummiest food, the staff really cool and lovely as well. Deffinitly go it you are visiting or live near by. The Queens gardens is the best spot to go for young and old.
