The biodiversity of New Caledonia is of exceptional biological and paleoecological interest. It is frequently referred to as a biodiversity hotspot. The country is a large South Pacific archipelago with a total land area of more than 18,000 square kilometres (6,900 sq mi). The terrain includes a variety of reefs, atolls, small islands, and a variety of topographical and edaphic regions on the largest island, all of which promote the development of unusually concentrated biodiversity. The region's climate is oceanic and tropical.
New Caledonia is separated from the nearest mainland by more than 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) of open sea. Its isolation dates from at least the mid-Miocene, and possibly from the Oligocene, and that isolation has preserved its relict biota, fostering the evolution of wide ranges of endemic species.

Very well planned, well maintained cultural centre. Great way to learn about local history, culture, architecture, flora, fauna & the affects of colonialism in the area. A clam, quiet & serene place. Wheelchair & pram friendly.

Amazing architecture with an extraordinary design story and cultural relevance. Beautiful place, very informative staff. A few bigger exhibitions and and a lovely busy cafe and we’d have a 5 star smash.

It’s a cool looking place but not very interesting, unfortunately. Got through the displays reasonably quickly as they weren’t particularly varied. Looks like it’s more of a training centre than a museum. Can read about the kanak history more in depth online. However, always good to support local industry/tourism. FYI the car park is a bit of a stroll from the actual buildings, so there is about a 10-15min walk to the buildings

Nice stop, not far from the Magenta domestic airport. There’s an entrance fee of $1000 per adult, but it seems well worth it. The Ranzo Piano structure is unique (although it could do with a bit of renovation). Generally there is a café and some shops, but when we went there (Tuesday morning) they were closed. The walk is not too hard, and is very accessible. All in all, a great way to kill a few hours between a flight and the next, plus, we learned more about th Kanak culture.

On a side note, there’s no shade on the walk from the airport. If it’s hot and sunny, consider a bus/taxi.

Interesting cultural centre, set in beautiful grounds. The gardens are lovely and well worth a walk. The cultural centre buildings are worth seeing as well. The experience is let down because a lot of the amenities are closed. The centre would be a great place to shop for tourist/ cultural items and a cafe would be very welcome as the centre is quite isolated.

  1. We had an amazing day in Numea. City Park was the first place when we got off the shuttle bus. The location was great. The views were amazing. There was a lot of friendly people to greet us and let us know what was available to do. Bus tours and train bus tours etc. The park was child and wheelchair friendly. Overall a great place

  2. Interesting place with local vibes ! On a weekend there is a musical kiosk that plays a local music! The band is very vibrant! You can hear local song! It was a great experience.

There is also a flea and street markets . People sell all kind of stuff. You can potentially find a little souvenir that you want to bring home. Everything is very cheap there.

There are also few food tracks.
Something good to experience when you are there!

  3. July 2023 – Lovely big open space in the middle of town. We had a short pit stop and wander before carrying on with our journey.
Not much happening whilst we were there, but I imagine it gets really busy.
