YHA Ltd, trading as YHA Australia, is a not-for-profit of members trading corporation providing hostel and other accommodation, travel and associated service in Australia. It is a member organisation of Hostelling International.
YHA Ltd became a management and director controlled corporation with managers and directors now controlling the selection of successive directors and directors being able to appoint a least one-third of their number without election Directors may profit from payments but ordinary members are not entitled to a share of profits or assets. Profits are not necessarily spent or re-invested in the network of hostels or the provision of accommodation and services to members. The founder of the youth hostel movement, Richard Schirrmann, took youths away from the conditions of factories and cities to experience the countryside on foot and by bicycle and, in winter, on skis and skates, finding accommodation in barns, houses, school buildings and later designated hostels in the countryside. In the 1960s, YHA NSW recognised eight principles including "2) Every encouragement should be given to those who travel by their own effort whether they travel by foot, bicycle, canoe, horse or row or sail", "3) Hostellers should be encouraged to enjoy the bush" and "4) Rural industries ... could be visited".In recent decades, the Australian organisation changed focus and closed many hostels in rural areas and concentrated on providing travel accommodation in major tourist destinations, particularly large accommodation in metropolitan areas and coastal cities and towns where accommodation was already readily supplied. While still using the name YHA (Youth Hostels Association), the organisation no longer has a focus on providing accommodation for youths and now provides accommodation regardless of age. At the same time, the types of accommodation provided has changed from hostel to include hotel-style rooms and suites and self-contained accommodation. Having accumulated large debts on city and prime tourist location properties, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic decline in travel revenue, the organisation was forced to sell more hostels, many well below their account book value, with nineteen hostels closed.

Booked stay for my mum who is in her 80’s. The staff took great care of her by listening and helping accordingly throughout the week. Mum often commented on the friendly staff, clean rooms and nice lobby. The location is perfect with the harbour and city at your doorstep. Very fortunate to have booked this hotel, real value for money. Many thanks to all staff again for taking great care of mum.

The room service is great except they don’t offer enough coffee, sugar and milk and you need to repeatedly ask at Reception. Parking is $15 per night (payable in advance) with no guarantee that you’ll get a spot in the secure garage. No meals available other than breakfast – $20 if you book, $25 if you just walk in each morning.

I was extremely happy with my stay here. Clean room, good view, great location, reasonable price, good breakfast at a reasonable price. I was really happy to have the microwave, kitchen sink and cutlery, plus cups and glasses, including wine glasses. I bought the makings of one meal at the little supermarket at Salamanca and was able to enjoy it in my room at my little table looking out at the view. Delightful. Just a short walk to Salamanca, the docks and the mall.

Nice and clean 3 star hotel in a good location in Hobart. The employees are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are renovated and clean. I enjoyed my stay and would come back. The internet (wifi) could be better, though.

Location very central and the best part. Rooms are very small but fine for a 3 star hotel. My biggest complaint is the internet. I often travel and have never experienced such poor quality and slow internet – if you want “normal internet” you have to pay for it daily which I have also never experienced. Definitely need to upgrade to a smart TV like every other hotel has – so you can enjoy watching Netflix etc while on holiday. Yes a luxury – but in these times, it is the norm, so this was disappointing.

  1. Extra helpful reception team! Thank you so much to Yarn for the warmth welcome with light and happy conversation when I arrive at the hotel that took my stress away from an early/ sleepless flight. She’s lovely, very knowledgeable and it was a hassle-free check in! Very clean rooms and big bed. Efficient housekeeping team as well. We enjoyed our night swim in the pool in level 3. In-house restaurant and bar if you are up for Asian cuisine. This is located at the city centre and near the waterfront, with wide dining options nearby! Definitely staying here again when I come back to Hobart!

  2. The facilities were impressive, and being centrally located made exploring the area a breeze. Our room were modern and cozy. The only downside was the failure to replace shampoo and body wash refills promptly.Despite this, the staff’s friendliness and the overall experience still left a positive impression. It’s a perfect blend of comfort and convenience.

  3. We always have a pleasant stay here. Rooms are very clean, bed is comfortable and bathroom is spacious. Great car park and we find it a great walk into the shops.
Restaurant is always a great place to eat.
    Staff are friendly and helpful

  4. Great hotel. The best ibis hotels I have stayed in. Great gym; rooms are comfortable, service is good; the location is very central. I had bao which were great and I washed them down with a cold fresh beer. A great focus on service and the food is worthy. I will stay here next time I visit Hobart.

  5. Stayed here for 4 nights – room was clean and looked after. But I found the room to be quite small for the price paid. Staff was approachable at the reception. It was a little disappointing that they didn’t provide room service, considering serviced hotel rooms are available for similar prices near by. Good location with 10 minute walk to the waterfront.
