YHA Ltd, trading as YHA Australia, is a not-for-profit of members trading corporation providing hostel and other accommodation, travel and associated service in Australia. It is a member organisation of Hostelling International.
YHA Ltd became a management and director controlled corporation with managers and directors now controlling the selection of successive directors and directors being able to appoint a least one-third of their number without election Directors may profit from payments but ordinary members are not entitled to a share of profits or assets. Profits are not necessarily spent or re-invested in the network of hostels or the provision of accommodation and services to members. The founder of the youth hostel movement, Richard Schirrmann, took youths away from the conditions of factories and cities to experience the countryside on foot and by bicycle and, in winter, on skis and skates, finding accommodation in barns, houses, school buildings and later designated hostels in the countryside. In the 1960s, YHA NSW recognised eight principles including "2) Every encouragement should be given to those who travel by their own effort whether they travel by foot, bicycle, canoe, horse or row or sail", "3) Hostellers should be encouraged to enjoy the bush" and "4) Rural industries ... could be visited".In recent decades, the Australian organisation changed focus and closed many hostels in rural areas and concentrated on providing travel accommodation in major tourist destinations, particularly large accommodation in metropolitan areas and coastal cities and towns where accommodation was already readily supplied. While still using the name YHA (Youth Hostels Association), the organisation no longer has a focus on providing accommodation for youths and now provides accommodation regardless of age. At the same time, the types of accommodation provided has changed from hostel to include hotel-style rooms and suites and self-contained accommodation. Having accumulated large debts on city and prime tourist location properties, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic decline in travel revenue, the organisation was forced to sell more hostels, many well below their account book value, with nineteen hostels closed.

I arrived at 11:30pm due to delays on the coach trip from Brisbane. The duty manager did everything he could, and that little bit extra, to expedite my check-in, including storing my bicycle securely. The room was clean and comfortable, the hot water service in the shower functioned well. Breakfast the next morning was excellent and the staff on duty were once again very obliging. I would certainly stay here again.

This is probably the third time we’ve stayed and what can I say but once again it was great. Accommodation quiet, clean and quite roomy, shower head great. There is Parking available which is another bonus. Close to shops and eateries. Everything you need is provided and there is a kitchen should you wish to “do your own thing”. Our booking this time included Buffet Breakfast which was very substantial. Staff were welcoming and very helpful with any queries thrown at them. I would certainly recommend a stay with Ibis if you need accommodation in that area. Check out wasn’t until 11 am which was another plus

The location was good, and you can reach transportation easily. They’re charging an extra fee for the car parking ($15 daily). Room was clean but hand wash and shower gels were empty. Hotel guests were loud, door shuts and speeches on the corridor may disturb.

Somehow, instead, a dying pulse of a former glory hotel. It had its old charm, but it reeks of sadness now. The receptionist lady makes rude assumptions. The bathroom pod had a lingering vomit stale smell that triggered me to vomit violently. It has a beautiful bathroom, though, but I am unsure if it’s wise for a hotel. It had a warning to keep the door shut, or the steam would set off the alarm. Or did you mean for smokers? Silly. I left the door open, and nothing happened. So there you go! I am not a smoker, no. It’s just good old steam with a scent of lavender. It did not improve the vomit’s stale smell for long, though. Remote was very dusty, and you do realise there’s a study that proved that this is worse than a toilet seat in germs? Tsk tsk, I will not be surprised if I get covid. It was a very dusty room, strangely. The window does not open; cue doom music; you will not get fresh air to combat the vomit’s stale smell. I recommend Chanel No.5 as it is best to create a crispy linen smell; don’t be afraid to pump it! I thank Ibis for providing me with a home for two days, and I will be grateful for their service as the cleaners are fantastic, beautiful, great people. I respect them. The other workers, not so much. Last but not least, you have to pay $25 a night for parking and that’s not even guaranteed. ?

Location: Great location very close to Newcastle Interchange. Check-in: long lines of people checking in took us about 20min at 2pm. Rooms: Adequate size & clean rooms with comfortable bed. Very small bathroom with poor ventilation. Breakfast: $28/pp. Not worth the price. The menu consisted of a few fruits. Inedible scrambled eggs along with baked beans, bacon and sausage. An assortment of bread along with toaster and jam, etc. I would suggest visiting nearby restaurants/cafes which have great food like The Happy Wombat.

  1. Excellent steak night on Tuesdays. Only have been twice and both on steak night which is a great meal at a great price, we just wish we had a bistro of this quality closer to home in Maryland but still not far too go! Looking forward to trying the burgers next!

  2. Clean and modern Pub. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Beers are clean and crisp with perfect temperature. The food is exceptional, well presented and very tasty using high quality ingredients. Well done to all staff and management at the Jesmond Hotel.

  3. Pleasantly surprised. Drive past here everyday and always thought it’d be a depressing hole. It’s quite nice. We just had beers but was a good venue. Very noisy(traffic) though.

  4. We are here for mums birthday and nothing has been a hassle for employee Hope! We had a couple of last minute requests (we honestly thought we were being painful patrons) and an over order, which she dealt with in a kind, prompt and accommodating way. Hope is a great face for Hotel Jesmond. What a wonderful customer experience. Thank you

  5. I do have to start off with the positives of how friendly and helpful the staff member was that assisted us very late at night with a last minute required accommodation. He was lovely on the phone and didn’t make us feel like we were pests for calling and arriving so late. Unfortunately, that was the only positive of our stay. There were cockroaches in the fridge, sink and one of the beds. Majority of the bedding was stained and some appeared dirty and actually unwashed from previous use. If it wasn’t for our desperation, we would have run screaming. I actually used the toilet across the road at the McDonalds as I knew it was cleaned. Never bothered setting foot into the bathrooms after setting eyes on it. I think even if desperate, next time I would sleep in my car.
