The Gold Coast, often referred to by its initials G.C., and officially the City of Gold Coast, is a city in Queensland, Australia. It is Australia’s sixth-largest city, the most populous non-capital city, and the state's second-largest city after Brisbane, with a population over 600,000. The Gold Coast is a coastal city and region located approximately 66 kilometres (41 mi) south-southeast of the centre of the state capital, Brisbane. The city's central business district is located roughly in the centre of the Gold Coast in the suburb of Southport. The urban area of the Gold Coast is concentrated along the coast, sprawling almost 60 kilometres, joining up with the Greater Brisbane metropolitan region to the north and to the state border with New South Wales to the south. Nicknames of the city include the ‘Glitter Strip’ and the ‘Goldy’. The demonym of a Gold Coast resident is Gold Coaster.
The area that became the Gold Coast was originally inhabited by the indigenous Yugambeh people. The city grew from a collection of small townships, the earliest being Nerang in 1865. From the 1920s onwards, tourism led to significant economic growth in the region, and by 1959 the Gold Coast was declared a city, with its first skyscraper being built in 1960. The Gold Coast boomed from the 1980s onwards with skyscraper construction. This era was defined by the city's ‘white-shoe brigade' developers, neon lights, and organised crime, particularly the yakuza and the Russian mafia. The late 20th century saw the city's tourism diversify with theme park openings, and in the early 21st century became an international destination for film production.
The Gold Coast has a diverse economy with strengths in health, tourism, arts and culture, and construction, with a GDP of $40.9 billion. The city ranks highly as one of the country's cultural and creative hotspots, alongside content creators, a growing video games industry, and leads Australia in startups per capita.
The Gold Coast is central to the nation's entertainment industry with a major film and television production industry, leading to the city's metonym of Goldywood. The Gold Coast is also host of the AACTA Awards and the Gold Coast Film Festival.
The Gold Coast is a major tourist destination with a sunny, subtropical climate and has become widely known for its surfing beaches (such as Surfers Paradise), high-rise dominated skyline, theme parks, nightlife, and rainforest hinterland.

My friend and I have been travelling up the east coast and Flashpackers is by far the best hostel we have stayed at! Clean, own bathrooms, activities on everyday, free breakfast everyday, free dinner 3-4 times a week. There is a hostel dog ( Spider ) Nice pool and lovely staff. They have their own van and drive into town multiple times a day. Highly recommend from my side.

This place is by far the best hostel on the east coast. The staff is amazing and makes you feel like home. Every night there are different free events where you can get free food and make new friends. The location is one of the best in Noosa. Close to sunshine beach and the free shuttles to main beach. I enjoyed my stay to the fullest and will always remember this place!

Really great hostel in Noosa. We stayed in a 10 bed dorm for 4 nights and couldn’t really fault it. The room was really clean and cleaned daily, the kitchen was very well stocked with free breakfast (eggs, cereal, toast), and the vibes were just really good and laid back.

The hostel owners organized something every night with tons of free stuff for the guests. We went to the sangria and nacho night which had loads of free sangria and tons of nachos, and we also went to the movie night which was so nice and chill and had lots of free popcorn.

Only slight drawback is it’s a bit further from the main area than Nomads, but Noosa has free buses for tourists and the hostel also runs a free shuttle bus down to the main junction. Walking to sunshine beach takes about 15 mins while walking to main beach would take about 40, but the buses were so frequent that we never had to walk!

Overall would highly recommend this hostel.

Probably the best hostel we’ve ever stayed in. Comfy beds, lovely outdoor space, great staff and loads of social events at night! Location was great, only a 2 minute walk to the bus stop if you don’t fancy walking into the town. Would highly recommend staying here!

Great place to stay in Noosa and one of the best Hostel experiences we had on the east coast. Clean private rooms, great kitchen with free breakfast, free shuttle bus to the main beach and Greyhound bus stop. Friendly staff. Good spot to start the coastal walk as it’s very close to the national park. Definitely recommend!

  1. Stayed 2 nights in the 16 share dorm. Like all nomads hostels, very young vibe. The hostel itself is situated in a great spot, close to the centre and not too far from the main beach. The receptionists were very friendly and helpful upon check in and with any questions in general. The room was spacious enough, the bottom bunks were quite high and you hit your head if you sat up too quickly, the same for most bunk beds, the room had 2 big fans to push air around (not entirely sure this counts as air conditioning as advertised) and it did get quite stuffy in the room, even with the windows opened. The room also accumulates a lot of sand (mainly because most people staying are coming back from Fraser Island) which is fine, however the housekeeping team when changing the beds over for the next check ins, didn’t sweep or mop the floor and even left our dorm room door open, luckily we had our valuables in the lockers. The bathroom was ok and the showers too, but there could have been a bath mat or something to dry your feet as the whole room is tiled flooring, this resulted in a wet and sandy floor when people used the showers one after the other. The kitchen was incredibly small considering how many people could stay at this hostel, there were queues to use the hobs at dinner time and hardly anywhere to prep your food. Limited cutlery and tea towels as well. Other than that it was a decent stay

  2. Used to be awesome place, now they’re charging nearly $100 for a 16-bed dorm at a youth hostel. The AC doesn’t kick in till 6pm, even with an extreme heat warning. After 6 pm, they decide to turn it off for a hour every 2hour duration. The hostel seems to have cut corners on traveler amenities, and honestly, there’s no valid reason for this lack of improvement. the staff is still awesome. I can handle the noise during my sleep, but can’t sleep in hot and humid room.

And the photo is room turned both lights, literally so dark

  3. The Setting of the air conditioning is a complete disaster. It’s unbearably hot in the room, so you can’t sleep. The staff is aware of the problem, but “the manager wants it that way.”

The kitchen is far too small for the number of guests and the air in there is also unbearable. In addition, the kitchen was hardly kept clean. Every (!) sink was blocked and the dirty dishes were piled up.

I have nothing to complain about the location or the staff, but based on the experiences described above I can only advise against a visit.

  4. My friends and I stayed at Nomads for the night and had such a lovely time. We celebrated at the bar in the evening, joined a hostel coastal walk lead by Lily in the morning and then headed to the pool party. Lily couldn’t have been lovelier! I couldn’t recommend it enough 🙂

  5. We had to shorten our booking, leaving a day early. This is the only non refundable hostel we have stayed in/ staying in for the rest of our trip. However, completely understand different rules for each place. Although, what I thought was outrageous is the front desk said we had to pay by showing them our card details because they “don’t have a card machine”…. When we walked to our room we passed the desk next to us which had a card machine right there! As it also turns into a club and you pay for drinks with a card machine…right makes sense!! Also my keycard on my phone never worked but was only there one night so it’s fine. In the morning, I woke up about 5 times to 5 different staff entering our room for something which felt so bissare. We were asked to leave early before our bus but we are still paying for the room as it’s non refundable. Very gloomy rooms but beds were comfy and hostel did have a good atmosphere. Most expensive hostel we have stayed in too and definitely the worst 🙂
