How to Donate to an Op Shop in Australia
Op shops, short for “opportunity shops,” are a popular choice for those who want to donate their second-hand items in Australia. These shops sell donated goods, with the proceeds usually going to charitable causes. If you are interested in donating to an op shop in Australia, here’s how you can do it:
- Find a local op shop: Start by researching op shops in your area. Look for ones that are conveniently located and support causes you care about.
- Gather your items: Sort through your belongings and gather the items you no longer need or want. Make sure these items are in good condition and can still be used or sold.
- Check donation guidelines: Before dropping off your donation, check the op shop’s website or contact them to see if they have any specific guidelines or restrictions on the items they accept. Some op shops may not accept certain items like electronics or furniture.
- Clean and package your items: Clean the items you’re donating and package them neatly. This will make it easier for the op shop volunteers to sort and sell your items.
- Deliver your donation: Take your donation to the op shop during their operating hours. Many op shops have designated drop-off points where you can leave your items.
- Consider gift aid: Some op shops have gift aid programs where you can opt to donate the proceeds from the sale of your items directly to the charity they support. Check if this is an option and consider it.
By donating to an op shop, you are not only decluttering your home but also helping a charitable cause at the same time. It’s a win-win situation for all involved!

a month agoYou wouldn’t believe this was a thrift store from the prices, stores and store managers that create store prices like this, add to pollution and keep inaccessible clothing and items to the richer class, instead of giving the SECOND HAND item a chance, to be owned by someone of lower economic position, you put it right back into the hands of people who can afford it to begin with. 45$ for a pair of heavily scuffed shoes? They will go to Kmart and get a pair for 20$- congratulations vinnies manager you have successfully added to the overproduction and over value of todays basic necessities.3 weeks agoA good vinnies with lots of clothes and nice pieces but would argue a lot of it is overpriced. There is a decent book section too. It is cleaned and organized and staff are very nice3 months agoThis vintage store is well stocked with something for everyone. It’s clean & organised, but the floor plan feels off. The long rows of clothes feel overwhelming. Perhaps if the clothes were laid out on smaller, circular racks. Nevertheless, the pricing is standard & affordable.4 months agoone of the best vinnies in sydney, actually has good stuff. but the prices, its like its not even a second-hand thrift store. why so expensive? you are a thrift store, price like one. are you not meant to be helping people? shame on you.6 months agoAs locals we’ve seen how this shop has gone to 5 stars to 2 in the last few months (to be generous). Honestly prices are through the roof (even at very poor conditions) which just does not make sense for second hand items. We love op shopping and do it every week, however we stopped visiting this store/donating here as prices keep increasing and items are on the shelves for months which makes the op experience so boring. Extremely disappointed…

a month agoYou’ll find something great here if you look for it and it’s never that expensive either. The staff have always been friendly and helpful. There is a mishmash collection of books that mostly contains crime, thrillers and pulp fiction.
I usually drop off my old clothes and items I’ve outgrown inside at the end of the store.
a month agoI NEVER leave reviews for places I go to but I just had to say that the girl named Naomi working was so beautiful and kind and absolutely made my day she was such a great person to talk to and so welcoming and made my shopping experience so beautiful2 years agoNext to Australian Red Cross. Close to bus stop. Good quality clothes. Staffs are friendly.Choose carefully as I bought a ring with one side of small glass missing. It costs $4 and I am not going to wear it.
Small belt is $14, just because it is a popular brand and made in USA. The belt has been damaged by a few unprofessional adjustments of previous owner.
Work shirt is $15. New pants are $20. Some others are $10.
They are not cheap, so choose carefully.
4 years agothe cheapest clothes at least 7dollars. i wish i could buy less than 5dollars for t shirt.staff woman she is friendly. so far every vinnies staff are friendly. i like it. just this branch is small because of location. cant find good things….7 months agoI enjoyed working here for over 5yrs. What their own site for managers describes as volunteer burnout was never observed. Nor was offered to me any counselling, reconciliation or even a transfer.

Sadly, since the re-fit it’s completely lost it’s appeal. We love to rummage around and find a bargain. It’s all about the hunt. It’s now a boutique clothes store that is seemingly colour coded and very sterile. The bargains have gone and the whole atmosphere has changed along with the addition of its now lacklustre offerings.where are you now putting all the good stuff now Vinnies Newtown? It’s very sad, as once upon a time it was one of the best.
it’s been gutted and gentrified for a good while but a stuck my head in the other day for a rumage just in case and it is literally impossible.
outrageous prices, huge focus on old clothes that because they happen to have abrand name are priced well above affordable. like some things are $60-$100
they have totally alienated their old customer base. a tradgedy. if you do want to try and find at least something, head straight to the back of the store from the denim and change room onwards is much better pricing I found something good and under $20 therei
There’s been a big re-vamp! Lots of women’s clothes especially if your after vintage and retro stuff, limited homewares – prices range between 14-and stuff over $100!
Delusional prices, just everything is overpriced, I’ve seen better things on the side of the road for free.
In the midst of a cost of living crisis and in the midst of greater interest rates raising rents and mortgage repayments, Vinnies has somehow ‘found’ the money to renovate their stores, spend money on advertising their ‘brand’ with these ridiculous “got it at Vinnies” posters, and not batted an eye at raising all their prices for ‘their’ goods to rather ridiculous prices. If you want to see what it’s like when a charity store goes corporal, look no further. There is no heart or soul at these OP shops anymore, just corporations with their hands out asking for money.
P.s. go to noffs op shop if you want a real op shop. 5 dollars or less on almost all goods.
