Serendip Sanctuary is a 250 ha (620 acres) protected area in Victoria, Australia, near the You Yangs and the town of Lara, some 22 km (14 mi) north of Geelong and 60 km (37 mi) south-west of Melbourne. Originally used for farming and other purposes, it was purchased in 1959 by the State Government of Victoria for wildlife research and the captive management and breeding of species threatened in Victoria, such as the brolga, magpie goose, Australian bustard, and bush stone-curlew. The sanctuary contains many different types of wetland and is home to many plant species as well, such as river red gums, tall spikerush, and tussock grass. Serendip now focuses more on environmental education about the flora and fauna of the wetlands and open grassy woodlands of the Volcanic Western Plains of Victoria. It was opened to the public in 1991 and is now managed by Parks Victoria.

First visit to this botanical garden. It is a compact but full of variety of flora in this garden. Most of plants, flowers and shrubs cam be found here. However, as i m not a botanist, i may be wrong. Surely, it is dilligently arranged based by climatic zone. It also has temperature controlled room for tropical one. Tho, it has less green area to sit down and picnic inside the garden but outside, it has plenty room. 2 car parks on the side of enterance door. Surely it is recommended for anyone including for relaxation and learning even just jogging.

  1. A nice place to get away from the hussle bussle of city into quiet nature. Some great nature walks easy for families with kids too. Can see many birds and native animals freely roaming. And the best part of it is it’s just a short drive from the city and it’s free too.

Tip: To spot Emus the best place is the road across the car park or on the right side as you enter the reserve gate.

  2. Mesmerising to see ducks and emu welcoming us at car park?.. tracks well maintained, lots of information all across.. it is worth visiting for animal/bird lovers.. no cost.. no cafes inside.. one public toilet at entrance.. no place to put rubbish..

  3. Easy walk to with the kids to see some wildlife and wetlands. Lots of information around. Place looks a bit dated and would be good for an update. Overall we loved it. Toilets are clean. There’s a cafe but was not open when we were there.

  4. Wonderful little wildlife sanctuary – great for adults and kids alike. The emus for me were a big draw there are plenty of them. There is also an area of enclosures housing native fauna as part of a conservation breeding program you can walk through which is essentially a free little zoo along the animal trail and you will likely also see all manner of fully wild animals on the other trails through the forest and along the lake also including possums, wallabies, kangaroos, parrots and even emus. Some emus as you arrive are kept out of the carpark by the fence but there are some freeloading around the park so be careful around them as they are large and powerful wild animals. I saw some other spectacular birdlife as well as the emus and would highly recommend the sanctuary for birdwatching as such.

  5. Good place to spend time with nature and for picnic.Lots of open space for barbecue. So many car park. Good place for walking. Kids can enjoy the walk in the nature.Few kangaroos and birds to see. Toilets are clean as well. Be careful with the ants, they are too many around small and big.
