Vallisneria (named in honor of Antonio Vallisneri) is a genus of freshwater aquatic plant, commonly called eelgrass, tape grass or vallis. The genus is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, and North America.Vallisneria is a submerged plant that spreads by runners and sometimes forms tall underwater meadows. Leaves arise in clusters from their roots. The leaves have rounded tips, and definite raised veins. Single white female flowers grow to the water surface on very long stalks. Male flowers grow on short stalks, become detached, and float to the surface. It is dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants. The fruit is a banana-like capsule having many tiny seeds.Sometimes it is confused with the superficially similar Sagittaria when grown submerged.
This plant should not be confused with Zostera species, marine seagrasses that are usually also given the common name "eelgrass". Vallisneria has arched stems which cross over small obstacles and develop small planters at their nodes.

I liked this place better than expected. We were originally going to give it a miss as there were a few exhibits not open. However we were at a loose end in Darwin on a Sunday. We got discounted tickets online through qantas, so it was under $100 for a family of four. It was good that you get a wristband and can go in and out as often as you like.

We particularly loved the reptile exhibit, and the meet the reptile show.

Stepped into the wild side at Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin and it’s a full 5 stars from me! The place is an absolute gem for wildlife enthusiasts and families looking for an adventure. The star attractions, the crocs, are magnificent and it’s a thrill to see them up close. It’s not just about observing; it’s about learning and appreciating these powerful creatures in a safe environment.

The staff are knowledgeable and passionate, ensuring everyone has a great time while educating visitors about crocodile conservation.

Whether you’re watching them glide through the water or witnessing a feeding frenzy, it’s an unforgettable experience. Crocosaurus Cove is a must-visit when in Darwin – where else can you come face-to-face with the largest reptiles on earth?

Excellent experience in the Cage of Death really interesting to get so close n personal without being eaten by a 5.5m saltwater crocodile called Wendell. These crocodiles were problems in the wild and rather than be euthanised they are rescued and kept in captivity. No they can’t live together these big males as crocodile are cannibals! Highly recommend the experience and the VIP tour where you get to hold Fluffy and feed Burt who has one eye is a bit slow but was once a star in various things such as Crocodile Dundee. Loved filming others in the 3 inch Perspex tube which is entered into from above and on a crane gantry which moves along and lowers you down to their chosen crocodile. They always attempt to ensure they respond. You get 15 minutes down with their chosen crocodile. It’s not scary or adrenaline pumping it’s fascinating to see how they function beneath the waterline. Age from 16 to ? As you have to be able to climb a few steps down a ladder and up again. They do not completely submerge you so you can sit in bottom and drop down with goggles on. Give it it try if your in Darwin it was the highlight of my trip!

Loved it for the most part!

All staff were super lovely and helpful. Especially loved the lady doing the reptile feeding. She was awesome and so knowledgeable!

The big crocs are absolutely massive and it’s so awesome being able to see them under water as well. Most other croc attractions we’ve been to have been in very murky water, so it was so cool being able to see them in the water.

Reptile house was also awesome, lots of great lizards, snakes and frogs to have a look at and all seemed relatively happy

The big fish tank was a little disappointing just because it was so dark we could barely see into it, but I guess that’s stimulating the natural environment so ?‍♀️

I was excited for the little croc feeding but i believe that area was closed. Also the upper floor with a sign that said “crocs and turtles” was closed too. I would have thought perhaps with a few attractions closed maybe entry should be a bit cheaper to accommodate

Awesome place to take kids for the day. Has heaps of shows, and interactive stuff for them to enjoy while learning. Staff are friendly. Pass is for the whole day, so if you’d like to leave and come back later on in the day, they give you a wristband that permits re entry. Big croc feeding shows are great, and very educational.
