Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is the principal public gallery in Auckland, New Zealand. It has the most extensive collection of national and international art in New Zealand and frequently hosts travelling international exhibitions.
Set below the hilltop Albert Park in the central-city area of Auckland, the gallery was established in 1888 as the first permanent art gallery in New Zealand.
The building originally housed both the Auckland Art Gallery and the Auckland public library, and opened with collections donated by benefactors Governor Sir George Grey and James Tannock Mackelvie. This was the second public art gallery in New Zealand, after the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, which opened three years earlier in 1884. Wellington's New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts opened in 1892 and a Wellington Public Library in 1893.
In 2009, it was announced that the museum received a donation from American businessman Julian Robertson, valued at over $100 million, the largest ever of its kind in the region. The works will be received from the owner's estate.

They don’t charge a fee ?to walk through the gallery, but they do appreciate a small purchase like a card. I bought some amazing artisinal soap ?? made from all natural ingredients ??

(Disclaimer: My art has been available at Inspirit for some time, but last week was the first time I’ve been able to visit the gallery in person and meet owner Jenny.) I loved how beautiful and spacious the gallery is – there’s room for the art to breath and to be admired. Jenny stocks an amazing range of NZ fine art pieces and takes great care in their selection and presentation. Inspirit should be on the must-visit list for all art-lovers living in or visiting the Hamilton region.

  1. Went for the free exhibitions that shows an extensive collection of Maori artifacts and artworks. The museum has spacious galleries and modern facilities. Staff are helpful and knowledgeable with enquiries.

  2. Awesome place to check out with kids. Museum is free but they have a kids area that’s $5 for adults and $10 for kids. It has two levels filled with toys ,pretend gardens ,science things. Kids absolutely loved it and had a great time. Loved how the pretend campfire had Māori songs to pick from too. The place was tidy and the staff were lovely. Also if you hand your ticket back at the end you get a packet of seeds. We got kowhai seeds and can’t wait to plant them.

  3. Waikato museum ( and art gallery) punches well above its provincial centre status. a compulsory visit place. exhibitions are exceptional , but also truthful to the artist.

  4. *EDITED* The price has increased since I wrote this. It is now $5 per adult and $10 per children OR $29 for a family of up to 2 adults and 3 kids. Leaving the original review so people can read the price increase. The Museum itself was lacking excitement for children, however we found out there was a kids area. This is $3 per adults & $6 per child UNLESS you have a community services card, in which case it’s $3pp. Huge area, many many different I interactive activities with the most popular being the Mario Carts!
Definitely a great school holiday, or even weekend, visit! Opens at 10am.

  5. Great museum I would recommend to everyone. Lots of free interesting exhibitions and a two floor play area (entrance fee) for kids (and kids at soul). Very educational and fun at the same time.
