Gorman House in Braddon, Australian Capital Territory is an Art Deco landmark house located in inner Canberra. It operated as a hostel from 1924 until 1972 and has subsequently become a popular centre for theatre and the creative arts in fields such as photography, dance, acting and music. It is listed on the National Heritage Register which describes it as "a fine and externally intact example of John Smith Murdoch's garden pavilion style, which makes a creditable contribution to the townscape." The garden pavilion style is characterized by low buildings, covered paths and open courtyards.
When it was constructed in 1924 the hostel was known as “Hostel No. 3” and in early 1925 was renamed the “Hotel Ainslie” and then in 1927 Gorman House. It was to provide accommodation for public servants and initially accepted both men and women. The first residents had moved in by 1925. The original structure consisted of single story pavilions with the dining room as the central focus but this accommodation was found to be insufficient so in 1928 two double story buildings were added at the western and eastern ends which enclosed the inner courtyards. It was mainly used to provide accommodation for young women but if demand fell men were also allowed to become guests. However if there was an increase in female clients the men were asked to leave.

I loved seeing the mixed crowds The Village Hostels Canberra attracts! Facilities are pretty good and the location is super central to Canberra centre. When I checked in, the receptionists Jessica (and a man whose name I didn’t catch) were both super warm and friendly.

  1. Can’t speak highly enough of the service and the room value. $119 per night. I’m actually shocked. We stayed here in a last minute situation while we had new flooring going into our home. I’m staying in an outdated caravan park for double the price per night tomorrow and I’d rather stay here. Clean, modern enough and spacious easily fitting the four of us. The gentleman at reception was really pleasant. Bed was comfortable. Wifi was great. Only things I’d recommend was extra pillows and bottled water/soft drinks in the fridges. Exceptional value.

  2. This was by far the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. Sure the price was cheap but it was absolutely disgusting! When we first arrived we were welcomed with dirty floors and dirty linen lined right thru the hallway. We had to move rooms as our TV and fridge didn’t work. Next room wasn’t much better with curtains that were ripped and had holes in them, walls also had holes in them and filthy.
Beds were falling apart. Don’t think you will get a microwave or bedside lamps, not even the phone was working, Your room will only be serviced every 3 days.
Excessive noise during the night. We also had rubbish left in the hallway all day and the smell was horrible. Main entrance door was also broken and falling off its hinges. Breakfast was very basic and barley edible. It was difficult to even get a clean glass or bowl. I would never stay again and in my opinion this place needs to be closed for a complete revamp.

  3. Simple , clean rooms.
    Neat beds
    Clean toilets.

This is all you need for a one day and night stay.

They have a pool , recreation area with books and some playing cards and boards .

    AC was good
    Geyser was working
    Toilet was clean
    Towels were provided
    Bath essentials were provided.

    TV was there
So overall nice to stay in budget.
    Wifi was free

    Good luck team Ibis !

  4. Don’t waste your time and money.
Booked for 3 nights, left after night 2. Rubbish not removed, no fresh towels or linen. Room service food was worse that pizza hut. Saw cleaners chatting or texting all the time. Rooms dirty, phone not working, air con was leaking water onto am already soaked carpet right next to the bed. Could hear every word through the walls. TV remote busted. Rooms smell old, can smell smoke in them too.

Reminds me of the hotels they give ex cons when they leave the big house. Pathetic.

  5. Location and services were great. The staff was very helpful and friendly.
I dont know about other rooms but my room carpet was very dirty our foot and socks kept getting dirty it feels disgust to walk on carpet. i recommend to the owner that they should steam clean the carpets if they cant change them..
