YHA Ltd, trading as YHA Australia, is a not-for-profit of members trading corporation providing hostel and other accommodation, travel and associated service in Australia. It is a member organisation of Hostelling International.
YHA Ltd became a management and director controlled corporation with managers and directors now controlling the selection of successive directors and directors being able to appoint a least one-third of their number without election Directors may profit from payments but ordinary members are not entitled to a share of profits or assets. Profits are not necessarily spent or re-invested in the network of hostels or the provision of accommodation and services to members. The founder of the youth hostel movement, Richard Schirrmann, took youths away from the conditions of factories and cities to experience the countryside on foot and by bicycle and, in winter, on skis and skates, finding accommodation in barns, houses, school buildings and later designated hostels in the countryside. In the 1960s, YHA NSW recognised eight principles including "2) Every encouragement should be given to those who travel by their own effort whether they travel by foot, bicycle, canoe, horse or row or sail", "3) Hostellers should be encouraged to enjoy the bush" and "4) Rural industries ... could be visited".In recent decades, the Australian organisation changed focus and closed many hostels in rural areas and concentrated on providing travel accommodation in major tourist destinations, particularly large accommodation in metropolitan areas and coastal cities and towns where accommodation was already readily supplied. While still using the name YHA (Youth Hostels Association), the organisation no longer has a focus on providing accommodation for youths and now provides accommodation regardless of age. At the same time, the types of accommodation provided has changed from hostel to include hotel-style rooms and suites and self-contained accommodation. Having accumulated large debts on city and prime tourist location properties, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic decline in travel revenue, the organisation was forced to sell more hostels, many well below their account book value, with nineteen hostels closed.

Really clean and comfortable rooms and staff were friendly too however the vibe of the hostel is a bit strange. Not at all sociable, just lots of people in the dark common areas working on their laptops with headphones on. No events organised and the kitchen area is tiny for the size of the hostel! Great as a place to sleep for the night in a central location but not as a place to meet other travellers.

Our double private room was amazing (very small sink in the bathroom but it’s not that bad). Beds super comfy, air-conditioning and cleaning service for free. Common areas always clean and quiet. Reception always kind and available. Kitchenette… Not satisfied at all. It only has microwaves, toasters and air friers. We stayed two weeks but we struggled a lot to eat healthy food, because of the few possibilities of cooking.

The prize is a little bit high, compared to the offered services. I would recommend this hostel for a short stay.

Good Hostel, but no longer a hotel soul. Nothing to say about the rooms. But there is a terrible shortage of gas stoves for cooking! During my reservation period, thefts took place in the fridges. Don’t leave anything in, it’s for you. The prices are exorbitant for what it offers.

I liked the hostel. Friendly reception and bar staff, good facilities, and good common area facilities. Great north bridge location.

Lost a star (to be fair) only as there were two incidents where the cleaner physically attacked me with a vacuum cleaner and other cleaning supplies because I was working (digital nomad) in one of the common spaces and as I explained to him I couldn’t accommodate his request to move myself and my laptop at the time (July 2023).

Beds were really comfortable. Rooms (I stayed in a 4 bed female dorm) were small but clean. However, kitchen was minuscule compared the numbers that were living in the hostel, pls consider expanding the kitchen!!

There was also a lack of hostel/social activities, a first in the hostels I’ve visited. Too many long-term guests staying as well, maybe consider housing them in separate rooms as it really detracts from the hostel experience as a visitor.

  1. I’ve been in an 8 female room which luckily was very tidy. The room is a bit dark and the windows are very heavy so it’s almost impossible to open it. The bathroom on that room has no lights. The hostel is quiet, with a very friendly and nice atmosphere. The kitchen is huge, has many tools to cook and is always clean. The bathrooms could be cleaner, but it’s okay

  2. Enjoyed my stay here, loved staying in a PRISON! Lots of information on the walls about different prisoners and life here – building retains many features/architecture of being a prison (but being a comfortable hostel). Stayed in a 4 bed dorm, fairly small and next to the courtyard but no noise after 10pm. Beds were fine. Rooms have a medium size locker in them (probably couldn’t fit most luggage). There were a few common areas, both inside and outside, and a decently big kitchen, plus lots of fridge/cupboard space for food storage. The have a luggage shed and reception hours are 9am-9pm. Found staff to be friendly and helpful. They can give you a towel if you like. Showers were clean and fine (cold tap could be sensitive). Convenient location for Fremantle and apparently the prison tours are great, but I was only there for a short period of time.

  3. It’s a nice and interesting experience to stay here. I don’t know what i expected but it really feels like sleeping at a the prison, even the rooms were cells (2 cells make one room). The place is well maintained and the prison style is well kept. There are many common areas and the kitchen is big. It really helped wake up in me great interest for knowing more about the prisons history of immigration in Australia. If not doing the tour at the prison next door, totally worth it staying a night here and at least visiting the prisons free gallery and gift shop.

Downside: it’s been remodeled and there’s no free parking, only free overnight parking in public areas

  4. We were attending a gig at freo social and decided to stay here for the night – what a great experience. Staff were so friendly and the accommodation was so quirky we loved it. Don’t be put off by the “youth” hostel – we’re in our 50s and didn’t feel out of place.

  5. Such a unique hostel experience! Staff were super friendly and helpful, there was a good amount of social space and a really spacious kitchen. Rooms are quite small and the power sockets aren’t in a great position (particularly if you are on the top bunk)but that is probably what you expect when staying in a prison! Not as clean as some hostels I’ve stayed in but fine for a couple of nights.
