Canberra ( KAN-bər-ə) is the capital city of Australia. Founded following the federation of the colonies of Australia as the seat of government for the new nation, it is Australia's largest inland city and the eighth-largest Australian city overall. The city is located at the northern end of the Australian Capital Territory at the northern tip of the Australian Alps, the country's highest mountain range. As of June 2022, Canberra's estimated population was 456,692.The area chosen for the capital had been inhabited by Aboriginal Australians for up to 21,000 years, by groups including the Ngunnawal, Ngunawal and Ngambri. European settlement commenced in the first half of the 19th century, as evidenced by surviving landmarks such as St John's Anglican Church and Blundells Cottage. On 1 January 1901, federation of the colonies of Australia was achieved. Following a long dispute over whether Sydney or Melbourne should be the national capital, a compromise was reached: the new capital would be built in New South Wales, so long as it was at least 100 mi (160 km) from Sydney. The capital city was founded and formally named as Canberra in 1913. A plan by the American architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin was selected after an international design contest, and construction commenced in 1913. Unusual among Australian cities, it is an entirely planned city. The Griffins' plan featured geometric motifs and was centred on axes aligned with significant topographical landmarks such as Black Mountain, Mount Ainslie, Capital Hill and City Hill. Canberra's mountainous location makes it the only mainland Australian city where snow-capped mountains can be seen in winter; although snow in the city itself is uncommon.
As the seat of the Government of Australia, Canberra is home to many important institutions of the federal government, national monuments and museums. This includes Parliament House, Government House, the High Court building and the headquarters of numerous government agencies. It is the location of many social and cultural institutions of national significance such as the Australian War Memorial, the Australian National University, the Royal Australian Mint, the Australian Institute of Sport, the National Gallery, the National Museum and the National Library. The city is home to many important institutions of the Australian Defence Force including the Royal Military College Duntroon and the Australian Defence Force Academy. It hosts all foreign embassies in Australia as well as regional headquarters of many international organisations, not-for-profit groups, lobbying groups and professional associations.
Canberra has been ranked among the world's best cities to live in and visit. Although the Commonwealth Government remains the largest single employer in Canberra, it is no longer the majority employer. Other major industries have developed in the city, including in health care, professional services, education and training, retail, accommodation and food, and construction. Compared to the national averages, the unemployment rate is lower and the average income higher; tertiary education levels are higher, while the population is younger. At the 2016 Census, 32% of Canberra's inhabitants were reported as having been born overseas.Canberra's design is influenced by the garden city movement and incorporates significant areas of natural vegetation. Its design can be viewed from its highest point at the Telstra Tower and the summit of Mount Ainslie. Other notable features include the National Arboretum, born out of the 2003 Canberra bushfires, and Lake Burley Griffin, named for Walter Burley Griffin. Highlights in the annual calendar of cultural events include Floriade, the largest flower festival in the Southern Hemisphere, the Enlighten Festival, Skyfire, the National Multicultural Festival and Summernats. Canberra's main sporting venues are Canberra Stadium and Manuka Oval. The city is served with domestic and international flights at Canberra Airport, while interstate train and coach services depart from Canberra railway station and the Jolimont Centre respectively. City Interchange is the main hub of Canberra's bus and light rail transport network.

The communication with Zoe before the day was excellent and Phil is a great guide with good local knowledge. This ride is suitable for any level of bike fitness, or lack thereof. I very much enjoyed the whole Mt Wellington ride experience.

We went on the easy, Mount Wellington, descent, and rainforest ride. The tour was extremely well organized. Phil and Rich lead the tour. There was always someone in front and the van followed behind. There was strict emphasis on safety anyone who was uncomfortable with part of the tour Could easily get in the van and ride that section. Helmets, clothes, and safety vests were provided. It can get cold up on the mountain even in the summer and they had extra jackets if anyone needed them.

you ride to the top of Mount Wellington in the van, with all of the bikes on the trailer. Each person is assigned to a bike, which I assumed matches their size. You ride down the road for the first 6 1/2 kilometers making several preassigned stops as a group. no one is left behind and you can go at your own pace. At the third stop you rest and get back on the van to go to the other side of the mountain and ride down a gently sloping trail.

There is one slope that is a challenging walk up for about 150 m. Aside from that there is no substantial portion of peddling and you will spend a lot of the time coasting with your hands on the brakes. My friend and I are both in our 70s and we loved it

The bicycles are well equipped, and in excellent condition.

Aside from the trip being an excellent adventure, you can be confident in the organization behind your trip. I highly recommend It

Great afternoon heading down Mt Wellington on mountain bikes . Phil & Zoe lead a professional tour with great clean equipment and bikes. The highlight was traveling down the pipeline track which has a rich history and well worth the ride despite a little rain . Could not recommend this company more highly.

Our group of four riders of very varied levels of experience and confidence had a fantastic days ride. The weather varied from cold, fog and wind on the top of Mount Wellington to dappled sunshine on the forest trail later in the ride. At all times our highly experienced guides made sure that we were safe, comfortable and having lots of fun. The safety briefings were very thorough and kept us feeling confident, even during the more challenging sections. A sensational day recommended for even the most basic riders.

Well organised and very friendly. I highly recommend Tasmanian Mountain Bike Adventures. The tour we did with them was the Mt. Wellington Summit Descent & Rainforest Adventure Ride. It was a great ride and the Pipeline track was very a enjoyable, easy and relaxing ride. Both Zoe and Phil were a pleasure to deal with, incredibly knowledgeable about the local history and generous with recommendations on what else to see, eat and do in the local area.

  1. Super friendly people! Really quality bikes and great prices.
They spent a good amount of time getting the setup perfect. Hiring an e-bike on a visit to Hobes, the guys also helped me pick out some routes on trailforks and I ended up riding 80k in 2 days.. a bloody excellent way to make the most of your trip! and your body!
Do yourself a favour and try out an e-bike here, they push you further, higher and into more techy terrain.. I jumped back on my monster 29+ trail bike and it feels like my skills and strength have elevated 20% after even just 2 days on the Crank-e levo bikes.

I’m sold. Cheers fellas, hopefully cya again soon?

  2. Very friendly and attentive staff, always happy to have a chat and offer advice. They were extremely accommodating with a hire bike I used for a riding lesson, I couldn’t have been happier with the service.

  3. Went in for a saddle fit session, and ended up with my bike being fixed for free! Kane was extremely helpful and kind, suggested a great saddle as well as gravel routes for me to try out. The shop ambiance was also really upbeat!

  4. Sensational and professional service from the team at Roll Cycles. As a visitor to Hobart it was great to be in the best hands imaginable. Special shout out to Kaine who promptly diagnosed and fixed a problem with my Cannondale SuperSix. Cannot recommend highly enough! Huge thanks Kaine… you’re a legend ?
