Napier ( NAY-pee-ər; Māori: Ahuriri) is a city on the eastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand and the seat of the Hawke's Bay region. It is a beachside city with a seaport, known for its sunny climate, esplanade lined with Norfolk pines, and extensive Art Deco architecture. Napier is sometimes referred to as the "Nice of the Pacific", although that is largely outdated and a more common nickname is 'The Art Deco Capital of the world'.
The population of Napier is about 67,500 as of June 2023. About 18 km (11 mi) south of Napier is the inland city of Hastings. These two neighbouring cities are often called "The Bay Cities" or "The Twin Cities" of New Zealand, with the two cities and the surrounding towns of Havelock North and Clive having a combined population of 136,290. The City of Napier has a land area of 106 km2 (41 sq mi) and a population density of 540.0 per square kilometre.
Napier is the nexus of the largest wool centre in the Southern Hemisphere, and it has the primary export seaport for northeastern New Zealand – which is the largest producer of apples, pears, and stone fruit in New Zealand. The Hawke's Bay wine region is now the second largest in New Zealand after Marlborough, and grapes grown around Hastings and Napier are sent through the Port of Napier for export. Large amounts of sheep's wool, frozen meat, wood pulp, and timber also pass through Napier annually for export. Smaller amounts of these materials are shipped via road and railway to the large metropolitan areas of New Zealand itself, such as Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton.
Napier is a popular tourist city, with a unique concentration of 1930s Art Deco, and to a lesser extent Spanish Mission, architecture, built after much of the city was razed in the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. It also has one of the most photographed tourist attractions in the country, a statue of the figure in local Ngāti Kahungunu mythology, Pania, on Marine Parade, Pania of the Reef. Thousands of people flock to Napier every February for the Tremains Art Deco Weekend event, a celebration of its Art Deco heritage and history. Other notable tourist events attracting many outsiders to the region annually include F.A.W.C! Food and Wine Classic events, and the Mission Estate Concert at Mission Estate Winery in the suburb of Taradale.

Lovely place! Great for a walk with family and friends or for a run anytime of the day. The is a variety of choice between cafes, ice cream stands, restaurants or even the national aquarium of New Zealand located on the beachfront. The beach has a smooth pebble shoreline rather than traditional sand which makes for a one of a kind walk along the beach. Walking through the stones with the crashing waves is somewhat therapeutic while surrounded by the stunning views of the town and surrounding mountains. I highly recommend this destination for any kind of visitor.

Absolutely different from what we usually see on a beach. Black small stones make this beach uncomfortable!

We were not there to swim only to take a quick view and appreciate the ocean from the beach location. A good place to walks, jog and exercise.

A sight to behold, heavy rain is due and the sea was churning hard as far as the eye could see. Majestic in its beauty. Stone, sand, pumice Beach with lots of driftwood. Clear pathways, great sitting and parking areas.

  1. This place was amazingly clean. And not like kiwi clean. Like SA clean. The whole place was immaculate. We will definitely come again.
We only stayed the night. But wish we could stay a bit longer. It seems like a place we would love.

    The service was great.
The bathrooms are super good. You have to pay $1 for hot water in the shower but we were happy to do so as it was so well maintained. No spider webs anywhere, no dust in the corners. The whole park is neat. No cones somewhat or a broken sign or nothing. We really were impressed.

  2. We arrived on a wet afternoon in November, we had been on the road for 4 hours. A party of three, one of us had done the booking and showed the rest of the party what the booking looked like. We agreed it would do us well for the weekend of the school reunion. So paid up months in advance. Back to our arrival, reception gives me a map of the place and informs me of where the toilets and showers are. I said, ” doesn’t the room have any” after driving over the Napier /Taupo road in the non stop rain. Visibility bad. She says no. Heart sank. Well we drive to the room, heart sank again. It was so small, crammed with bunk bed and a queen. You could just get round the beds. 2 on the ground 1 on the top bunk at all times. 3 suitcases on the lower bunk. Nowhere to put anything, we had to take it in turns to get ready, ie dress & put make-up on hair etc, on the morning of reunion. Nowhere to make a hot drink, kitchen was outside in the rain, nowhere to sit, picnic table, black thing with attached seats was out in the rain. 2 manky chairs on a miniature deck. It was a “human kennel”. I was completely appalled. The rain didn’t stop the whole time we were there so showers and toilet stops were in the rain and up hill. Boy were we glad to check out after two nights. It was a cold and wet break, but we survived. Couldn’t wait to get home. Reception weren’t that bothered when we explained we thought we had booked something bigger with internal amenities. Won’t be going back there, ever.

  3. Due to the weather, we booked here before departure and our family could only choose to stay in a small studio. It’s a little hot in the room and there is only a fan and no air conditioning. But the advantage is that it’s on the beach here. You can walk a few steps to see the sunrise. You don’t need to get up too early, which is very good for us.

  4. We stayed at the park last weekend, two young families. The park itself is okay, more basic facilities than our first holiday park but we were prepared for that. Showers cost $1 for 5 minutes which was fine, though it would be good to have a note of this in their Park Features or FAQs in the Top10 website. Our booking experience wasn’t very good. This was our second Top10 with Hanmer as our first. I booked two weeks before our visit and booked for two powered sites to charge our EVs. I assumed the park allowed EVs based on our experience in Hanmer and there were no indication in the Top10 website that EV charging was not allowed. A few days after booking, I inquired about whether charging the EVs would be okay upon advice from my husband, to be safe. I was told that it wasn’t allowed based on advice from a specific car brand which doesn’t appear to apply to all EVs but I understood that that was the holiday park’s call to make. I requested to move to unpowered sites and was told that there would be no refund available. I thought that was quite unfair as booking a powered site to charge an EV was a reasonable assumption to make based on no warning given on the website, another Top10 holiday park allowing it and our EV not requiring any more Amps than a standard campervan/motorhome. I would have expected a bit more flexibility provided we inquired well before our visit about a policy that was not communicated clearly in the first place. Suffice to say, we will not be coming back.

NOTE: based on the response on my review, this park will lie to try and descredit the customers’ complaint rather than listening to them. DO NOT GO HERE. The park refused to give us a refund for requesting to move from a powered site to an unpowered site even though it was 10 days before the reservation, well before they communicated the No EV charging policy. We ended up paying a higher price for power without being able to charge and they are the ones who are accusing us of wanting to use free power! I have supporting evidence and screenshots to back up my claims from my emails with them. BEWARE!!

  5. Booked over the phone for a Saturday, they booked Friday!
Then rung to book an extra night, and was told that I could pay for the extra night closer to the time of arrival (which in my head was sat..in theirs fri?!) I had ready card deets over the phone for night one, and was not informed that for the second night it was going to be charged automatically.
Tried to sort it on the premises. I was read back my email address which was incorrect. And my phone number which was incorrect. May explain why no one called me too to enquire why we weren’t there on Fri. Oh my lord.
Long story short, we only needed one night as we had to return home. No refund or partial refund offered. Told it was my fault for not ringing to confirm receiving emails. Then… told that my email address was originally correct, bit then not the second time I phoned???
A complete shambles. And short 225.00. Such bad service made for a tainted trip with funds down for our kids’ activities.

We were pleased with the facility but hugely disappointed at the lack of attention when booking over the phone.
