Another great place to visit in nouvelle Caledonia. A wealth of information and displays about the settlers , missionaries and the many sailing ships brought out by the French to settle here. Easy to get to part of town, easy walk from the bus station.

A few good displays. Nice touch to have French and English. Not a big museum but good history on display. Current display was on La Monique, the ship lost at sea with a large loss of life and no clue as to why, where or how.

Small but comprehensive. The section covering the La Perouse expedition & shipwreck contains many artifacts, and it has AC.

A must-see museum with Nautical flavour As others have said you could easily overlook this Museum located where it is – but it really is one of those hidden treasures. Beautifully laid out and with translations of virtually every display from French into English. Some interactive displays for little people. An amazing story of discovery, loss, searches, mutinies, pride and hatred. It has it all!!

An interesting boutique museum with some great artefacts from La Perouse and other historical items. Probably only need 30-45 minutes.

  1. Interesting cultural centre, set in beautiful grounds. The gardens are lovely and well worth a walk. The cultural centre buildings are worth seeing as well. The experience is let down because a lot of the amenities are closed. The centre would be a great place to shop for tourist/ cultural items and a cafe would be very welcome as the centre is quite isolated.

  2. Nice stop, not far from the Magenta domestic airport.
There’s an entrance fee of $1000 per adult, but it seems well worth it. The Ranzo Piano structure is unique (although it could do with a bit of renovation).
Generally there is a café and some shops, but when we went there (Tuesday morning) they were closed.
The walk is not too hard, and is very accessible.
All in all, a great way to kill a few hours between a flight and the next, plus, we learned more about th Kanak culture.

On a side note, there’s no shade on the walk from the airport. If it’s hot and sunny, consider a bus/taxi.

  3. Amazing architecture with an extraordinary design story and cultural relevance. Beautiful place, very informative staff. A few bigger exhibitions and and a lovely busy cafe and we’d have a 5 star smash.

  4. Very well planned, well maintained cultural centre. Great way to learn about local history, culture, architecture, flora, fauna & the affects of colonialism in the area. A clam, quiet & serene place. Wheelchair & pram friendly.

  5. It’s a cool looking place but not very interesting, unfortunately. Got through the displays reasonably quickly as they weren’t particularly varied. Looks like it’s more of a training centre than a museum. Can read about the kanak history more in depth online. However, always good to support local industry/tourism. FYI the car park is a bit of a stroll from the actual buildings, so there is about a 10-15min walk to the buildings
