Absolutely phenomenal. I usually tend to go out and explore by myself and museums are definitely my favourite. This museum has got to be one of the best by far. Shares a lot of history knowledge and I learned some new things about the history of the land. Wonderful items and I would 100% definitely recommend going!!

Amazing museum with free admission! Lots of different exhibits with displays on local history, artworks and wildlife. I thought the Antarctic section was super cool and unique. It’s right near the city centre and we spent about 2 hours walking around the whole museum.

A fantastic stop for anyone visiting Hobart.

Walking in I was able to listen to a symposium on Wildlife Conservation, and then a very interesting talk about the utility of ecological collections.

After this, I walked through the museum and the art gallery. In the art gallery I verged upon outstaying my welcome, listening to perhaps the most passionate and knowledgeable staff member, Luke, that I have come across in any gallery. I would recommend this place just to listen to the bloke talk!

    Definite recommendation. (All free too!).

  1. I came here with my mother during our hobart trip. It was an experience!
There are some artworks that reference sexual things and mild gore, but there is adult content warnings around so you can avoid those if you plan on bringing children. It is advertised as having old and new art, but to be honest, it is not much old art like my mother was hoping. But the modern art was very expressive! I really enjoyed looking at the different mediums – so much creativity! However, I do wish there was an artist’s statement that you could read. Everyone was on their phones using the app, which didn’t describe much of the artworks in depth.

Food is not very great. There is a bar and pizza place inside, bur it is very dark in there. The outside area was super fun and had amazing views of the mountains, though!

Overall – you could still bring your children here, just make sure to avoid adult content if you don’t want your child seeing that. This museum is not as interactive as others, and could be overwhelming for those with sensory issues.

It was an interesting experience! I had never experienced anything like this before, but I do wish there was more description to the art itself. I would come again ☺️

  2. Mona is an impressive venue, and my visit from 10 am to 3 pm allowed me to explore its vast collection. The sheer magnitude of exhibits can be overwhelming, so I recommend starting at the bottom and taking a break for lunch before tackling the remaining floors. Be prepared to dedicate the whole day to fully appreciate everything Mona has to offer.

  3. If you are visiting Tassie, it’s a must to visit MONA! Outdoors is gorgeous and indoors is just so much fun and so unique. It’s highly recommended to take the ferry as that is an experience itself. There is so much to see and experience at MONA so prepare to spend a full day here. The food at Faro was absolutely amazing and they had some unique entertainment happening while you dine! Super interesting! Also make sure to download the app and book some of the experiences in advance on the day via the O app.

  4. Second visit and it’s still a great experience! We like to dress up and make a whole day of it, starting with the MONA ferry ride, morning tea at the Void Bar, lunch at Faro and lots of art (the main attraction) all through the day. The architecture is fantastic, making the museum itself an exhibit. It would be wonderful if the last ferry left after dark so we could also enjoy dusk in the outdoor spaces. You cannot visit Hobart without visiting MONA but please keep your kids under control and close to you – it’s not a playground for them, it’s a playground for adults so our fun comes first, please!

  5. Well …. Art is subjective and in my opinion the art here was not to my liking with a lazy art feeling.

I completely understand some people will find this experience above and beyond .

The venue it’s self is amazing , the ferry ride was ecstatic.

I would like to see more passionate works of art rather than status quo works .
