This is new to Whangarei since we were last visiting NZ. Its a great addition/attraction to the town of Whangarei. The artwork was interesting, the whole atmosphere and views from the top were fantastic. We espically loved the hundreds and thousands of mosaics throughout and outside. A real interesting place to visit.

A very interesting gallery with examples of Hundertwasser’s work and his personal history. The rooftop garden/forest is well worth a look. We found his work to be reminiscent of work by Gaudi in Barcelona, especially in the use of colour, materials and shapes. If you’re heading north, go to the Hundertwasser Public Toilet in Kawakawa if you enjoyed this gallery.

Building with interested, creative architecture. It is located in the park, near a large play round area for children. There are several restaurants and cafes around. Location is very convenient.

  1. A very quaint Northland museum. We were lucky to see the kiwis, got some pictures of the lizards, and walked around outside a little. The staff was friendly and helpful and I enjoyed learning more about the history of the area.

  2. A really great little museum/heritage sight with the highlight definitely being the kiwi enclosure. They are more likely to come out at feeding time (3pm) but we were told they are active most of the time, we just had to be patient. We checked back a few times during our 1.5h at the centre…they have a cctv screen so you can see if anything is moving. We saw one that was walking around and feeding ? There are also lots of geckos to look for.

The rest of the centre is well laid out and perfect for a family day together.

  3. The main entrance is at Gate 1, but Google Maps directs you to Gate 2. Look for the brown sign for Gate 1. They have a variety of things to see and do throughout the complex. There are 2 Kiwi birds which you can see and a Museum upstairs. Outside, there is the miniature trains which are run by a club. Tickets for this are separate to the entrance fee
