Tips for First-Time Op Shop Visitors in Australia
Op shops, short for opportunity shops, are second-hand stores where you can find a wide variety of pre-loved and often unique items. It is a great way to support a charitable organization while also snagging some great bargains. If you are a first-time op shop visitor in Australia, here are some tips to help make your experience enjoyable and successful.
- Research the op shops in your area: Before heading out, do some research on the op shops in your vicinity. Look for ones that align with your interests and are known for having a good selection of items.
- Set a budget: It can be easy to get carried away with the low prices, so it is important to set a budget beforehand. This will help you avoid overspending and ensure you are getting the best value for your money.
- Bring cash: While some op shops do accept cards, it is always a good idea to bring cash with you, as it may be the only payment option available.
- Check for sale days: Many op shops have designated sale days where you can find even better deals. These days can vary, so it is worth checking if there are any upcoming sales before your visit.
- Dress comfortably: Op shopping can be a bit of a treasure hunt, so it is important to dress comfortably. Opt for casual and easy-to-move-in clothing, as you may be spending a lot of time browsing through the racks.
- Inspect items thoroughly: Since op shops sell pre-loved items, it is important to inspect items thoroughly before purchasing. Look for any damages or defects and consider if they can be repaired. Only buy items that you are confident will be useful or enjoyable to you.
- Be open-minded: Op shops offer a wide variety of items, so try to keep an open mind and be willing to explore different sections. You might be surprised at the gems you find in unexpected places.
- Donate or volunteer: If you have items that you no longer need or want, consider donating them to an op shop. It is a great way to give back and support the community. Additionally, if you enjoy your op shop experience, you might even consider volunteering at one.

a year agoWorks here very unhelpful and almost rude, very disappointing. Very expensive for a lifeline shop who are soposed to help people with low incomes. Will never ever go there again and will tell anyone else not to either. Terrible service all round.a year agoAbsolutely loved this op shop! Great variety of clothes and things! Prices were amazing!a month agoSecond hand op shop for all your needs2 years agoAnnoyed to be followed around by a staff member “tidying the shelves” wherever I went. I left the shop after having spent a reasonable amount of money feeling very uncomfortable2 years agoWent to Lifeline Shop today and found great deals. The staff were lovely. Will definitely go back.

4 months ago5-star charity shopFrom the moment I walked in, I was greeted warmly by the staff, who were more than happy to help me find exactly what I needed. The shop was well-organized with a wide range of items at great prices.
What impressed me the most was the quality of the items – everything was in excellent condition, despite being second-hand. I was able to find some amazing pieces Overall, I highly recommend this 5-star charity shop to anyone looking for high-quality items, great prices, and a wonderful shopping experience. The staff’s kindness and the quality of items truly set this shop apart from others. I will be returning in the future!

5 Replies to Your Go-To Guide for Biggest Op Shops in Port Macquarie
Great place to relax (from Op Shopping in the adjoining store) & enjoy a nice coffee (with a vanilla slice or chocolate brownie, both of which are generously sized & scrumptious. The meals are great value too.
Good variety. Lots of books. There is also a cafe.
Better than the major ones. Better helpers for the local community, not big business churches.
What a Great shop, very well layed out, staff so friendly
Staff here are awesome, so friendly and inclusive with some all abilities folk as well.
There is always a bargain to find or cross the road to the other store and find a bargain there as well.
Parking can be a little tricky, so be patient as it’s an industrial area with lots of trucks coming and going.
